According to the group, which is made up of about 200 local shop owners, some ¥9.8 million in fixed property tax is expected to be imposed on the statues over the next 45 years.

The fixed property tax is imposed on land, homes and other properties used for businesses, including signs. The statues were taxed because they are considered “properties used for promoting” businesses, according to the Setagaya Tax Office.

“We were surprised. We didn’t know such a tax would be imposed on the statues,” Kenichi Sakaguchi, head of the local business group, told The Japan Times on Wednesday.

その団体によると、この団体は約200の地元商店主で構成されたものだが、固定資産税として約9800万円が今後45年以上彫像に課税されると見込まれている。

固定資産税は土地や家屋、看板を含む商用の財産に課税される。世田谷税務署によると、その彫像が課税されるのは、それらが「PR用の資産」と看做されるからである。

「私たちはびっくりしました。そんな税金が像に課税されるなんて知らなかった」地元商業団体の長サカグチケンイチ氏は水曜日ジャパンタイムズにそう語った。

Chat wars continue: KakaoTalk hits 10M downloads in Japan

KakaoTalk has always been big in South Korea. But now, it is rising in Japan, recently passing 10 million downloads.

In Japan, there are currently three contenders vying for the top spot: LINE, Comm and KakaoTalk. Currently, the numbers put NHN’s LINE in the throne with 100 million users as of mid-January 2013. But with KakaoTalk hitting 10 million user downloads a week ago, as spotted by SD Japan, will this app stand a chance of usurping the throne?

Kakao Talkは、元々韓国で成長した。しかし現在では、日本で成長中であり先日1000万ダウンロードを突破している。
日本では、今の所頂点を競う3つの競合者―LINE、Comm、そしてKakao Talkがある。現在、数上ではNHNのLINEが2013年1月中旬までに1億人のユーザーを持つ王座に就いている。だが、SD Japanに発見された1週間前1000万ダウンロードを達成したKakao Talkがいる状態で、このアプリは王座を奪う機会を打ち立てるのだろうか。

KakaoTalk announced a huge deal with Yahoo! Japan last year to see the two join hands and reach out to over 65 million global users. Available on iOS, Android, Bada OS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone and PC, KakaoTalk has a significant presence in Korea.

Apparently, according to a case study of the app published on Korea Marketing, 90 percent of Korea’s smartphone owners use KakaoTalk. And according to a domestic survey, 72.4 percent expressed a certain loyalty, which is difficult to find elsewhere. They said that they will not buy mobile phones that do not support the messenger service.

Though the odds are slim, there is still reason to celebrate. I could just imagine KakaoTalk in its standard yellow and orange beaming widely as it throws confetti all over its users. Today, it announced its campaign to party and thank its users for helping it achieve such great heights. Prizes include a MacBook Air, Pentax Q10 and other attractive items.
