Through MaGIC’s e@Stanford Program, payment service provider Soft Space was able to visit Silicon Valley and engage with its VCs. In addition to securing a deal, Soft Space would also be able to help increase awareness about Malaysia’s startup ecosystem among the companies in the hallowed tech valley.

MaGIC’s CEO Cheryl Yeoh believes that Malaysia has the right ingredients to become a successful tech hub; all it needs now is to be assembled.

Last year, it launched MSA 2014, a five-day event in October, combining keynote speeches, workshops, investor speed dating sessions and the largest startup career fair ever held in Malaysia.

Track 1 will cover topics that are relevant to high-growth startups that have the potential to scale and grow globally, out the Southeast Asia region.

In the workshops, participants will be exposed to actual skills and knowledge provided by experienced instructors and speakers from various industries and backgrounds.

The workshops and talks are created as a result of MaGIC’s engagement with the local entrepreneurs, particularly through Entrepreneurs Dialogue (ED) — a collaborative effort with other agencies that works on growing the tech startup space.

It has also become a source of inspiration for entrepreneurs in Malaysia, proving that a local startup has the ability to attract attention from major global VCs, and hold its own against colossal rivals like US-based Uber, which has ten times the amount of funding in its stash.

GrabTaxi isn’t the only success story to come out of Malaysia either. Jobstreet.com was acquired by Australia’s job ad portal SEEK for US$524 million.

Other startups have also found favour and fortune, albeit on a smaller scale.

Two years ago, Carlist.my, an automotive deal site, secured a US$13.5 million from Australia’s Carsales.com.

Other burgeoning Malaysian startups include mobile bus-ticketing platform CatchThatBus, which nabbed a US$1.5 million pre-seed funding from Jungle Ventures and 500 Startups only a week ago.

The IoT space is also seeing promise; one startup being WaryBee, which its founders describe as a “wearable technology for personal safety that can be worn as fashion jewellery and used to trigger SOS alerts discreetly”.

There is also the 1337 Accelerator (in geek speak, 1337 translates to ‘elite’) which aims to incubate and fund new startups. Among its more interesting incubatees are ParkEasy, which allows drivers to find parking space easily; WorkChat, a messaging platform for businesses; and GigFairy, which aims to be the Airbnb for live music.

There are a still a few kinks to iron out — such as stemming a brain drain, but Malaysia is also making great strides in the area of support.

Level of support

The Malaysian government is actively supporting the growth of startups. In the Malaysia Budget 2015, Prime Minister Najib Razak announced that his administration is ramping up support for entrepreneurship and human capital.

The government also wants to target the Muslim-oriented tech market.

Through platforms such as the Investment Account Platform, Shariah-compliant businesses would be able to receive investments and loans.

Other investment schemes include the SME Investment Partner, which would match the funds raised through the private sector.

It is also channeling funds to R&D to the tune of MYR 300 million (estimated US$70.74 million).

In a 2015 Financial Review report, Malaysia’s Treasury, Ministry of Finance, Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah said that the government is engaging global consulting firm McKinsey & Company to help attract VCs and investment firms from the US and as well as investment and entrepreneur partnership programmes from Australia.

He also discussed the possibility of making Cyberjaya, a city 20 km from capital city Kuala Lumpur, the tech hub of Southeast Asia that would rival Silicon Valley.

Another government-supported initiative, Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (MaGIC) will also see a growth in its scope of goals and functions in the coming years.

Through its programmes, it wants to make Malaysia an attractive destination for expatriate tech companies.

And no, there is no sleigh of hand or illusion involved.
