Rocket Internet already has Jovago, a hotel booking site present in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, as well as parts of Africa, but Kiren says the two are not in competition with each other. Expanding Zenrooms to South Asia is something the team is considering, but if and when that does happen, the two very different sites will work in tandem.

Rocket is already ahead of its plan to bring four startups to Asia each year. The announcement was made three months ago, and in that time frame it has already launched three companies. Kiren, who previously led Foodpanda and is a veteran by Rocket Internet standards, says four startups is a “bare minimum”, and the “commitment given to investors.” There will, most likely, be more.

“We’re so bullish on underserved markets in Southeast and South Asia that wherever we see opportunity we’ll try to capitalize on it,” he explains.

Dreary rooms

The value proposition Zenrooms offers is quality, reliability, and uniformity of service – rather like Uber does with UberX. Each hotel on its site will have undergone a strict, exhaustive, and thorough audit to ensure it meets a particular standard. Kiren explains that during their research, they understood travelers in this category look for six things: a clean room, comfortable bed, in-room shower, flatscreen tv, air conditioning, and wifi. Hence, each hotel will, at the very least, offer these basic services.

High volumes

Kiren says the new startup will appeal to four types of travelers. The first is domestic middle-class family travel – people who want to take their kids to see new places such as short getaways to locations in Bali or Surabaya. Another category is young professionals and couples who may not have very high disposable incomes but want to travel. Then there are business travelers traversing between countries in Southeast Asia. Lastly, he believes the low prices will also attract European and American backpackers who usually stay in hostels.

Alibaba opens offices in France and Germany as it seeks new goodies for Chinese consumers

Alibaba, China’s ecommerce titan, is opening offices in Munich, Germany and Paris, France, the company said today.

The move is the latest in a series of steps dating back to early 2013 in which Alibaba is seeking out business partnerships to get more foreign products for sale to Chinese consumers on Taobao and Tmall. Cross-border sales is one way that Alibaba is differentiating its online marketplaces from rivals in China like JD – while also sating growing demand in China for new things from around the world.

中国イーコマース市場での巨人Alibabaはドイツ・ミュンヘンとフランス・パリに事務所を開設すると本日発表した。

Alibaba, co-founded by chairman Jack Ma, opened offices for the same purpose in the UK and Italy back in October. It also has a US base.

Arch-rival JD opened its first office in the US a few months ago as it too pursues more cross-border deals for Chinese shoppers.

会長Jack Ma氏らによって共同設立されたAlibabaは先の10月にイギリスとイタリアに同じ目的で事務所を開設した。またアメリカにも拠点を持っている。

対する主ライバルのJDも数か月前にアメリカに初めてとなる事業所を開設し、中国消費者へのクロスボーダー（越境）取引の増加を試みている。

Alibaba’s German and French offices – to be run by country bosses Terry von Bibra and Sébastien Badault, respectively – will “serve as a ‘gateway to China’ for international brands and businesses of all sizes,” the company said in a statement.

“In Europe, our top priority is to engage with existing local partners and help European brands, retailers, small businesses, and government partners understand the opportunities China offers and how Alibaba can help them access this market,” said Michael Evans, president of Alibaba Group.

BitMEX

BitMEX uses Bitcoin to allow anyone to bet on any type of financial asset in the currency of Bitcoin. BitMEX allows investors access to the global markets using Bitcoin through the company’s trading platform. CEO Arthur Hayes was a former equity derivatives trader. Based in Hong Kong, the company gets a transaction fee for each trade and had seen $250 million USD in trading volume on the platform so far.

The company won the first place out of 300 companies at the Innohub Competition in China and was one of the two startups chosen in Asia for the StartupNext competition hosted by Google for entrepreneurs. CEO and founder Tanya Cheng comes from an investment banking background in the UK.

Snapask

With its catchphrase “tutor in your pocket”, the Snapask mobile app provides on-demand academic support by connecting students’ questions to crowd-sourced tutors from top universities,so that learning can take place instantly over one-on-one online sessions. The business model is 200 RMB ($31 USD) for 30 questions and 4 RMB ($0.6 USD) per question for high school students. The company has grown more than 15,000 users around Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore and now users can buy Snapask topup cards from Seven Eleven in those areas. Based in Hong Kong, the team had raised a $1.8 million USD angel investment and a $2.5 million USD series A.

TongJuBao’s P2P Protect leverages P2P logic and social-viral models in order to resolve a major customer experience gap, a weak point of the insurance industry. The company has international competitors like Guevara, Friendsurance, but in China TongJuBao is the only company to do adapt P2P to the insurance sector. The company takes a 25% fee cut, much less than traditional insurance companies, and had seen 600 members paying 20,000 RMB ($3,100 USD) in its first week since launching.

In the past startups spent their marketing budget on banners, search ads and social media ads. However these days more and more of that budget is spent on content marketing as a better way to engage with consumers. Oz’s software provides content marketers and writers with an integrated dashboard for researching and developing unique ideas.

Reality: It also means that precious data, and the person utilising such information, also cannot leave. This argument is akin to saying ‘stay indoors because the big bad world is scary’. (Although, the slow demise of mobile zombies could be a real perk).
