BibbyCam Brings Photo Filter Fun to BlackBerry Users

Regular readers – as well as BlackBerry users – might be familiar with BibbyCam, the Indonesian-made photo filter app whose husband-wife team we interviewed earlier this year. And now the duo, Grace Tahir and Ronald Komalaputra, are onstage at our Startup Asia Jakarta contest, vying for the cash prize that only one team can walk away with.

The free BibbyCam app has 20 image-altering filters, and users can craft their own out of a number of preset options. The resulting photos can be shared directly to Pinterest or Twitter, or just saved to your BlackBerry as a memento. It has grown to 80,000 users around the world, and has been selected by BlackBerry’s maker, RIM (NASDAQ:RIMM), as a featured ‘Carousel’ app.

BibbyCam’s pitch then turns to address what the judges will inevitably interrogate them on once their five minutes of demo time is over: monetization. The app is ad-supported, using some clever targeted ads, and the co-founders say that they’re in talks with some unnamed companies on various partnerships.

Before going onstage, Grace told me that the team of seven at the startup are readying themselves for BB10, the all-new OS that BlackBerry will start rolling out on new phones later this year. Being utterly different from the antiquated BB7, it’ll require a total rewrite and redesign of the app.

After giving an energetic and straight-forward demo at our Arena, the panel of four judges had a chance to respond. Benjamin starts by saying that “BlackBerry is not doing too well” and that it doesn’t appear to make sense not to be on Android. Ronald counters that BibbyCam can excel on BlackBerry and that its latest version is a good step forward. But that still doesn’t really address the issue of why commit to a declining mobile OS.

Gobann Aims to Make Moonlighting in Indonesia Quick and Easy

Finding work can be a big problem in Indonesia. It’s a huge country that’s plagued by unemployment and overeducation; the typical toll booth worker in Indonesia holds an undergraduate degree. So says Gobann’s Michael Luhukay, anyway, and his company has a plan to fix it.

Luhukay noted that one problem with an online job site in Indonesia is that Indonesians still lack trust in internet services like this, and jobs are often still referral-based. Gobann is a micro job market — think fiverr — that takes these factors into account to bring jobs to Indonesians via the web.

Sellers — anyone with a talent — can log into the site and post about the services they offer with text, images, and video. But buyers can also register what they are looking for in the “demand feed.” Each type of user can browse through the other, and can also see any friends in common on Facebook or other social media, which taps into the Indonesian preference for referral-based employment. Once a buyer and a seller want to connect, they pay a small fee — 50,000 rupiah ($5.35) — and then they do the deal; after which they can rate each other for future buyers and sellers to see.

Luhukay says there is a prospective market of 55 million users and $112 million, and the company plans to make money from transaction fees, as well as advertisements and potentially licensing of its HR database in the future once user numbers are higher.

Judge Leslie Loh asked about the company’s targets, and Luhukay responded that Gobann is aiming for 500,000 users in the first year. To do this, the company will visit schools to attract students looking to moonlight, and partner with creative communities throughout the country. The service launched May 1st, and the company says it needs $300,000 to fund the first two years of operation.

Nepal-based Grepsr Targets Businesses with its Web Crawling Service

At our Startup Arena Jakarta competition today, Nepal-based startup Grepsr pitched their data extraction and web crawling service. This concept is really great, as it enables any individual or business to automate data collection, regardless of their skill level.

Readers may recall that I wrote about Grepsr back in January, and the startup says that since then service has over 300 users, with over 8 million records delivered from 1000 sources. 300 users doesn’t sound like a lot, but the company’s revenue model includes a $129 per project fee, with other pricing plans available if you need recurring data collection or other big jobs. Grepsr says that it has been profitable since its first month of operation.

Judge Daniel Saito asked about how they planned to scale and acquire users. Amit said that the service is more viable to use enterprise customers, who need data from more sources. Once they start growing they can release some feeds for free, once that are in high demand. This can be an introduction, and once businesses need more they can come to Grepsr for a custom pricing. Getting exposure is one problem as the company is based in Nepal, so they noted that events like this (Startup Asia) is one step. Amit says many of these customers have already tried other services and are frustrated with them. And so they are talking to more potential enterprise customers.

Harpoen Officially Launches at Startup Arena

Picture this: Leaving digital messages at places you have physically visited before, telling stories, and engaging in future conversations with people who would eventually visit them. Harpoen does just that. We’ve covered the Indonesia-based startup before, and this afternoon at Startup Arena, the location-based messaging platform was first on stage to officially launch our competition and its latest version of the app.

For those who are new to Harpoen, it has the concept of having digital conversations appearing anywhere, allowing you rediscover neighborhoods within 50 metres in radius from where you physically are, even when you are moving. Users can see who has visited and what has happened previously. Imagine if something historical happens in that particular location, and the persons involved jots down first-hand. Future generations can enjoy receiving first-hand information instead from third-parties that could, highly possibly, be distorted.

In the newest update, co-founder John Patrick tells us that it has streamlined the features of the application. The new update has included a “around me” button, and also allows you to sort message interactions by timing, so the latest interaction will appear on top of the list. The app also allows you to add photos and puts a time limit to the messages, so after a certain period the messages would “evaporate”. The app is already available on iTunes App Store, and prior to its official launch, it already boasts more than 33,000 harp views.

John also shared that they are looking to launch out of Indonesia, since number of iPhone users in Indonesia has the smallest slice in the country.

Benjamin Joffe from Plus Eight Star also commented that the pitch was lacking in a business model, and does not address the real problems of users. Daniel Saito from SkySQL echoes the sentiment. John acknowledges that, but however, also stresses that it is trying to create more situations where future conversations could be held, which makes dialogues even more meaningful.

[Simply Business] Would You Keep Going or Would You Quit?

The media loves to flaunt the success of the startups, the crazy valuations, the billion dollar acquisition and the so-called overnight success. But the most interesting stories are actually the hard part, the near-death experience and the comeback.

OMGPOP, the creator of Draw Something created 35 mediocre games before Draw Something and was in near bankrupt situation right before Zynga acquired them. Angry Birds was the 52nd game that Rovio made before their “overnight” success. Kaskus.com, Indonesia’s biggest online forum went through six years running without any profit. I can only imagine how emotionally straining it is for them to continue working hard despite the lack of monthly payroll and the departure of staffs that sees an unclear future of the company.

The emotional frustrations, the stress and the weight being put in their shoulders are mostly untold. The thought of letting go of their startups must have crossed their mind countless times as they go and face their co-workers every single day.

This is definitely not a startup-exclusive problem. How about RIM, which is having such a negative reputation among the media and yet still putting up a confident front. Yahoo shares the same fate, especially after retrenching 2,000 people globally.

How can they keep on going despite everything?
