Translation

What kind of shoes are you wearing?
The Japanese word of shoes is written as "transformed leather" in a Chinese character.
The shoes we have these days have thick soles to absorb the shock the feet of wearers get from walking or running.
This style was imported from abroad into Japan in the 1870's.

The Japanese military adopted this from France as one of the modern equipments but the Japanese had been using straw sandals until leather shoes came to Japan.

The Chinese character for straw sandals is like this 草鞋 which is read Kutsu which also means shoes.
It is a difference Chinese character from the one for western shoes.

The material of 草鞋 is straw that is dried rice plant.

The culture developed by the rice-growing-agriculture is called “rice culture."
