Freelancer.com Prepares to Jump into Indonesian Market

By the end of 2012, Indonesia’s National Family Planning Coordinating Board (BKKBN) predicts that the country will have 245 million people. Obviously this is a promising market for human resources. Global outsourcing online marketplace, Freelancer.com, is now preparing its expansion to Indonesia, with an Indonesian version of its website and an upcoming official launch. The manager of Freelancer.com Indonesia, Helma Kusuma, wrote in Freelancer.com’s mailing list that the company wants to talk to business people as well as those who have been successfully using the service in Indonesia.

Say Cheeeeese: SingTel Acquires Photo App Pixable for $26.5 Million

Singapore-based carrier SingTel (ASX:SGT) sure loves social apps, today snapping up the US photo-sharing service Pixable for US$26.5 million. Pixable (app pictured right), which says it has over 4 million users, claims to be a smarter way to browse friend’s photos than offered by the likes of Instagram, using algorithms to show you more relevant images.

The SingTel acquisition gives Pixable a boost in emerging markets.

This is what happened to the business of group buying. Groupon, a site that came out of nowhere in late 2008, had by 2010 rejected a 6 billion dollar offer from Google. This, of course, is nothing new in the Internet era. What’s different, what’s special about Groupon, is that its business model actually makes sense, in the sense that it actually makes money.

For Chinese Groupon wanna-bes, there are also additional benefits. Group buying thrives on thrift and efficiency instead of profligacy and wastefulness, two values that the most traditional of businessmen can identify with. Furthermore, the barrier to entry seems low, while first mover advantage seems high.

Dangdang Compensating Users for Account Thefts

A few days ago, a number of Dangdang (NYSE:DANG) users reported that their accounts had apparently been hacked, resulting in the theft of some users’ money in addition to gift items and other account assets. That’s not too cool. But what is sort of cool is that Dangdang responded pretty quickly, freezing all accounts for a couple of days so users could change their passwords, and then getting to work on the compensation.

A Beijing Dangdang user who had 1078 RMB ($171) stolen logged into his account last week to find that the money had already been repaid by Dangdang. A Shanghai user who lost 4500 RMB ($714) in gift credits said that customer service had also offered him full repayment in store credit, although he rejected the offer because the credit came with an expiration date just a month away, which wasn’t true of the gift credits stolen from him.

That case — and others — are still being worked out, but Dangdang has promised to make sure its customers are satisfied. We certainly hope that they will follow through on that promise, but honestly their speed in reacting to the crisis at all has been pretty impressive, especially when compared to some other people involved with e-commerce who shall remain nameless. Hopefully, the fast response time is a reflection of a growing trend in putting some effort into customer service, and not just a fluke!

Rising Oil Prices Could Hurt Chinese E-Commerce

The rising price of oil has been all over the Chinese news recently. It’s having a serious impact on motorists, and it has even resulted in a nationwide subsidy for taxi drivers (although they say the subsidy isn’t enough to offset their increased costs). But it could also have an impact on Chinese e-commerce, as the price of shipping for nearly everything is likely to rise as delivery companies are forced to deal with increased energy costs.

According to the Guangzhou Daily, industry insiders are saying they do expect a price hike during the busy season, which begins in May. Other insiders have said the gas prices can be digested internally and prices won’t rise; in all likelihood it will depend on the company in question. But oil prices aren’t likely to start dropping anytime soon, so sooner or later delivery companies will need to compensate somehow.

10 Reasons Why There aren’t Many Startups in Japan

A survey by Global Entrepreneurship Monitor has shown that Japan has the lowest entrepreneurship activity among the 37 countries that were included in the study…

Studies show that the best predictor of the entrepreneurial activity is population growth. This somewhat makes sense because if there are more people a) there are more opportunities b) there’s low job security and social security c) there are more people to compete against in order to survive. Then we might assume that developed countries usually have low entrepreneurship because there’s low population growth.

日本に限られた数の新興企業しか存在しない10の理由

Global Entrepreneurship Monitorによる調査では、日本は彼らの調査対象37か国の中で最低の起業活動しか見られないという結果が出た。

同調査は起業活動に対してもっとも良い先行指数となるのは人口成長率であることを示している。これは考えてみればもっともなことで、もしも人口が増えれば、a) 機会も増大する b) 雇用の保障と社会保障は低下する c) 生き残るために競争に身を投じる人が増える、ということである。つまり、我々は先進国は人口成長率が鈍っているために、常に起業活動も低調である、と仮定することができるかもしれない。

As the matter of fact Japan has some characteristics that makes it a very suitable country for entrepreneurs such as

Low tax rate (compared with the US or the EU)
High work ethic and masculinity culture (work is important, growth is essential, etc.)
Educated workforce
High Integration with the rest of the world (compared with any other large Asian, South American or African countries)

Why is then there are few startups in Japan???

しかしながら、実際には日本はシンガポールや韓国よりも高い出生率を示しているにも関わらず、起業活動指数では低い値を示しているのである。

実際には日本は以下のような起業家にとって有利な特徴を備えている。すなわち、

では、どうして日本には新興企業がそれほど多くないのであろうか？

なぜなら

1. Japan scores lowest of all countries as regards risk-taking behavior (according to the World Value Survey, 2005-2008). Starting a company with a few people on a small bdget is taking a huge risk.
2. Japan is a collective society and in collective societies there's low need for "individual self-achievement." If you don’t have a strong desire for “self-fulfillment” or being very influential or very rich you wouldn’t want to start a company.
3. Japan has high power-distance in society. This makes things very hard for young entrepreneurs when dealing with suppliers, creditors and even employees. Additionally this makes decision making harder and longer.
