But the venture will have to make money. There are plans to offer customised versions of the software to financial institutions like banks to help them better engage their wealth management clients. Several have already approached the team to discuss deals, Chia said, with two large deals expected to be signed soon.

Currently, banks spend huge amounts of money every month on contacting clients through manual phone calls and SMS. “The whole wealth management industry still works on relationships [between manager and client],” Siantar said.

To be clear, Call Levels is not looking to white label its technology. The app, which is seeing 15 per cent month-on-month growth, already boasts 6,000 users who have created 20,000 active call levels.

There are an estimated 230 million people globally who own at least one stock in the markets actively, suggesting a global opportunity — not limited to Asia. Hobby traders and market watchers are also viewed as potential users.

According to Siantar and Chia, angel backer Teo started in 1973 with JP Morgan, and by the time he turned 38, he was Head of Global Markets in Taipei and Hong Kong, and subsequently Head of North America Foreign Exchange.

Upon his return to Singapore, he was asked to take on a lead role at GIC as Head of Foreign Exchange, Commodities and Short Term Rates, where he stayed for nine years.

Timothy is now retired and currently sits as Chairman of the board of St Luke’s Eldercare, and holds several directorial appointments at organisations such as the National Library Board and Guocoland.

Didi Kuaidi will raise $2B for the fight against Uber

China’s ridesharing app battlefield is fast turning into a cash-burning party. That’s how it looks today following the reports that Didi Kuaidi plans to raise a whopping US$2 billion to help secure its spot at the top of the ridesharing app market. Both Uber and Didi have been planning to raise additional funds in China for some time now, but Didi’s number in particular keeps climbing – first it was rumored to be US$1 billion, then US$1.5 billion, and now here we are at US$2 billion. Uber, meanwhile, reportedly plans to raise up to US$1 billion of its own specifically for the China market.

Although neither company has officially shared numbers, both Didi Kuaidi and Uber are probably losing money in China. Uber is apparently losing money globally, and its high subsidies in China likely make the country an area of significant loss. Similarly, Didi is spending hundreds of millions on promotion alone and giving away free rides – I would be surprised if the company was turning a profit.

In principle, there’s really nothing wrong with that. Operating at a loss during expansion in order to secure a bigger slice of the market is an approach that many highly successful tech startups have adopted over the years. But the sums being spent in China’s ridesharing app market are so massive now that one wonders how long this kind of battle can really be sustainable. Neither company will want to lower its discounts and subsidies and chase profits until it has secured a significant hold on the market and the Chinese government has giving ridesharing apps a regulatory pass.

In an unexpectedly large number of conversations and meetings, instead of hearing proposed measurable milestones, investors are given a “to do” list of activities from entrepreneurs: hire some engineers, launch the first product, get some revenue, do some marketing, etc.

In a world of staged funding rounds, an idea that my Stanford colleague, Robert Burgelman, and I wrote about in 2007 can provide entrepreneurs with a way to think about how they should contemplate what needs to be achieved with each infusion of capital and the size of the round they are raising: the Minimum Winning Game (MWG).

予期しないほどたくさんの会話や会議のなかで、投資家は測定可能なマイルストーンではなく、「やること」リストをアントレプレナーから渡されることが多い。エンジニアを雇う、最初の製品をローンチする、売上げをたてる、何かのマーケティングをやるなどなど。

Originally, we described the Minimum Winning Game as:

“Defining the first major market opportunity that is limited enough to provide a clear target for technology and product development efforts in the short-to-medium term, and sufficiently large that successfully pursuing it provides a foundation for longterm corporate development.”

Note that this is very different than the Maximum Winning Game: the goal of achieving somewhere between $50 and $100s of millions of dollars in revenue within a fixed time period (often within 5–7 years).

In the context of a startup, the idea of the Minimum Winning Game can be applied to how entrepreneurs need to lay out the goals they hope to achieve with each new round of outside money. Since subsequent rounds of funding are often required for a startup, entrepreneurs want to mitigate various risks through each funding stage so that they can raise the next round of capital at a higher valuation each step of the way.

* Attaining a target growth rate at the end of the funding round
* Launch of a version of the product with specific features on a given date.

So, when a VC asks an entrepreneur about what will be accomplished with the next round of funding, entrepreneurs would be well-served to think of what is the next Minimum Winning Game that their company needs to win in order to have a chance to achieve their goal, and what measurable milestones the team will use to keep score and know if they are winning the game in which they are playing.

Why France’s startup ecosystem may have just had its best week

For much of the past year or so, the French government has been engaged in a massive campaign to promote the country’s growing tech economy.

Dubbed, “La French Tech,” government ministers have been barnstorming the country to highlight efforts by entrepreneurs. In addition, they’ve been leading massive delegations of startups to major trade shows like CES in Las Vegas and Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

There was no single, record-setting funding. And for the moment, France is still waiting for kind of massive exit that will confirm its efforts. But over the past five days, there was a remarkable run of news:

Monday: In a grand theater in Paris, Sigfox announced a partnership and investment by Samsung. While the amount was undisclosed, the deal gives a major boost to Sigfox’s platform, a network designed to enable communication between connected objects.

French officials have been promoting the Internet of Things as an area where the country can be competitive. And Sigfox, based in Toulouse in southwest France, has been making a bid to be one of the country’s most successful global players.

Earlier this year, Sigfox raised $115 million, the largest round of venture capital in the history of France.

As evidence of Sigfox’s growing profile, the announcement drew both Young Sohn, president and chief strategy officer of Samsung Electronics, and France’s economic minister.

今年に入りSigfoxはフランスで過去最大のベンチャーキャピタルラウンドとなる1億1500万米ドルを調達していた。

Tuesday: Another emerging French IoT player, Actility, announced a $25 million round of funding. The round was led by Ginko Ventures, and included Orange, Swisscom, and Foxconn.

Based in Paris, Actility installs IoT systems that also allow machines to communicate with each other. While it doesn’t compete directly with Sigfox, it uses a communication protocol that competes with the one that Sigfox developed.

While it’s not $115 million, $25 million is a big round by anyone’s standards.

Tuesday: The same day, a little Paris-based company called La Ruche Qui Dit Oui, announced it had raised $9 million. La Ruche has been going for several years, and it uses the Internet to help farmers sell directly to local communities of buyers.

Two notable things here: First, the round included an investment by Fred Wilson of Union Ventures, his first in France and just second in Europe (the other being SoundCloud.) French officials have been waving their flag, trying to attract notice from U.S.-based venture capitalists. Wilson is a good one to have in your corner.
