The fascination of this story has much to do with the way it is told. In Fiennes' handling, very little is stated in a straightforward or obvious way. It's almost as if he took Abi Morgan's screenplay (adapted from Claire Tomalin's book) and stripped away its most utilitarian dialogue, leaving only hints and suggestions of emotions that then must be fleshed out by the actors. The method, whatever its source, makes for a narrative that's constantly evocative, mysterious, almost impressionistic, and that involves the viewer in the pleasurably engrossing game of puzzling out the characters' aim and motives,

especially in the early parts of the story when the lovers' attraction is conveyed through only the most subtle of looks and gestures.
The success of this gambit entails a range of fine performances, especially in the lead roles. Bewigged and whiskered, Fiennes creates an exuberant portrait of Dickens that encompasses his vanity and selfishness as well as his bounteousness and thirst for life. As Nelly, the luminous Jones conveys the young woman's mix of awe, intoxication and anxiety as she is drawn inexorably into the orbit of a powerful older man.

At certain points, the relationship between Arbor and Swifty may remind you of John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men," only here the little one is George, the unpredictable, emotionally limited outcast, and the big one is Lenny, his guardian and minder—and they're both just boys who should be thinking about the future, not slaving in the present. What happens to them should not have been a foregone conclusion. More than one someone is to blame. "If a fella steps on a round pebble and he falls down, breaks his neck, it ain't the pebble's fault," George says in the novel, "but the guy wouldn't a done it if the pebble hadn't been there."

Certain he would be replaced due to his directorial inexperience, he was delighted when a representative of Paramount visited him at his home, and told him the studio was so thrilled with the footage shot thus far that they had no plans of replacing him. "I gave up not drinking and not smoking and have not been troubled with pneumonia since," he wrote. But looking at this scene from "July," as Jimmy (Dick Powell) gets out of a cab with his girlfriend to deliver unexpected gifts to people in his downtrodden neighborhood, it looks like Sturges gave up being "Preston Sturges," at least for the space of one scene.

Compared to "The Lady Eve" or "The Palm Beach Story," where the action is so often soundstage-bound and made lush and gauzy through star-focused three-point lighting (which makes the slapstick pratfalls all the more unexpected and hilarious), this scene from "July" is harder-edged, shot outdoors, full of large and busy crowd shots where the actors are often dominated by the landscape.
Look how hard the outline between Dick Powell's face and the taxicab is at the start, and how the shadow falls across his right cheek, how the fabric of the street stand is torn, how the eye travels to the two men standing next to it in the lower left corner, one's work-cap and the other's fedora cutting up the frame.

That makes it emblematic for a detective film where the mystery that would normally be at its center is displaced, along with much of the rest of the plot, by brilliant moments of character and style. It was an "A"-level movie shot in "B"-movie time. Not unlike the close-ups and long shots that divide its stars here, "The Thin Man" is best thought of as as series of singular images, knowing glances, and double entendres that flow like the gin from Nick's martini shaker. "A dry martini, you always shake to waltz time," Nick instructs a bartender, and it's that drily romantic rhythm that matters far more than story.

Van Dyke had just worked with Loy and Powell that year in "Manhattan Melodrama," and convinced MGM to cast them together again in "The Thin Man." Film historian Thomas Schatz notes that "Melodrama" had reworked the early-thirties Warner Brothers gangster formula so it became the launching point for a romantic drama: Clark Gable's hood is sent to the electric chair, which "clears the way for Powell and Loy's happiness."

As the movie continues, and the viewer learns more of what an ordinary guy Theodore is—he checks his e-mail on the ride home from work, just like pretty much all of us these days—director Jonze, who also wrote the movie's script, constructs a beguiling cinematic world that also starts to embrace the viewer. The way Theodore's smart phone and its earpiece work is different from ours, and soon it becomes clear that "Her" is something of a science-fiction film, set in the not-too-distant but distinctly fantastic future.

A big part of the movie's charm is just how thoroughly Jonze has imagined and constructed this future Los Angeles, from its smoggy skies to its glittering skyscrapers to its efficient mass transit system and much more. (There has already been, and there will no doubt be more, think pieces about how Caucasian this future L.A. is. There will likely be few think pieces about how the fashion for high-waisted pants in this future makes life unpleasant for the obese.)

But maybe I'm not giving Dolan enough credit here. He himself is gay, so maybe it's unfair to peg him as a mere spotlight-stealing ally. Maybe he truly tried with all his heart but failed to convince me. The most obvious issue with the film that I'm far from the first to point out is that it's about twice as long as it needs to be. This is of course a fairly simplistic criticism, but the more pressing fallout from this is that it ends up burying our two leads' under an avalanche of white noise. What instead dominates the film is Dolan peacocking his visual technique in an attempt to be recognized as a serious auteur, and many are buying it, declaring him a prodigy.

Remember in science class where we were introduced to the Periodic Table of Elements listing substances and telling their weight and characteristics? I have often wondered whether we could have a Periodic Table of Kindness, with different projects attitudes and goals we could nurture to make this world a better place. So I was astonished when I saw this actualized at TED Women by the filmmaker Tiffany Shlain. She presented on a film project "The Science of Character" and event—Character Day, February 5, 2014—with the same purpose in developing more positive human characteristics in our school children. Speaking of her lifelong feud with older sister Olivia de Havilland, Joan Fontaine once quipped, "I married first, won the Oscar before Olivia, and if I die first, she'll no doubt be livid that I beat her to it!" And now, alas, Fontaine has indeed beat her sister to death, so to speak. Though she was a sophisticated and humorous woman of the world in her private life, Fontaine made a substantial film career by ringing detailed variations on pathological shyness and continually wincing embarrassment. She was brittle and sly-eyed, with the breaking voice of a pubescent boy and a body that always looked like it was twisting to ward off sudden blows.

Singapore is a cauldron of activity with throngs of people crammed into a small area, but it manages somehow to maintain a sense of order and calmness. Downtown, modern high-rises alongside aging colonial architecture frame broad leafy streets and lush parks, making this a wonderful city for walking. Ethnic neighborhoods offer fascinating glimpses, and tastes, of different cultures, and a series of quays along the river provide plenty of opportunity for al fresco dining. During the frequent torrential downpours and the heat of the day, you don’t have to miss a beat, descending into a sprawling series of underground malls connected by pedestrian tunnels and an easy-to-use subway system.

One such subway line carried me out to my job site the next day in the suburbs, emerging above ground into a residential area studded with lots of technology company campuses. The work I did there over the next few days was interesting, but what I really remember is lunch. Lunch was at an open air food court and market, Mosquewhere technology workers sat in long tables enjoying fresh made soups, stews, meat skewers and fried things, a mix of Malaysian, Indian and Chinese.

The film is probably also a tad overlong, but it's a blast to hang out with these people, and Russell creates such an infectiously zany vibe around them that if even you notice the running time, you probably won't mind. For all its brashness and big personality, "American Hustle" is a character study at its core—an exploration of dissatisfaction and drive, and the lengths to which we're willing to go for that elusive thing known as a better life.

At the entrance of Rjukan’s Tinn Museum, troll faces (queer-looking giants and dwarves from the Norwegian woods) greet the visitor, and old farm houses and barns show the history of house building from medieval times to the end of the 19th century. Textiles, old prints, paintings and wood carvings represent the art and traditions of the farmers who once settled in this valley before bold scientists and entrepreneurs discovered the place and started to produce energy from the power of its waters.

A winding road brings you up to the mountains in the south, and a narrow fjellveien (mountain road) leads up to 4,134 feet and over one of the highest passes of Norway. Via the places of Tuddal and Sauland, it isn’t far to Heddal, where you can visit the biggest and best preserved stave church of Norway. Built without any nails and steel parts, the wooden building is an architectural masterpiece of the early Middle Ages. Still being the parish church of Heddal, its doors are open to tourists during the summer season.

"These days the words old maid or spinster may be dismissed as outdated, even cruel, but cat lady is still bandied about unreservedly and with the same intent: as a derogatory term for an unattached female. A single woman in a Mrs. Whatsit getup of coffee-stained schlubby layers who reads dog-eared paperbacks, never misses her shows, eats from cans along with her furry wards. Who hasn’t got laid in decades and couldn’t if she tried. Who languishes in a cramped, overheated, urine-stained apartment piled high with dirty dishes, cigarette smoke, ratty furniture, and, of course, cat hair.

That’s the mishegas that gets thrown my way because I am Of A Certain Age and remain unmarried, childless, and domestically solitary save for a feline cohabitant—especially now that nearly everyone can get married and have kids. Forget about the fact that I live in an amazing city, enjoy my work and friends, love my considerate and charismatic roommate.

But while he might look like a scruffier version of Chandler from "Friends," there is more than a smidge of Travis Bickle seeping into his psyche. It seems that Aiden hears voices in his head that urge him to commit gruesome acts of violence against those who offend his standards of conduct, from public-transit sexual harassers and drug addicts to bullies and the clueless lady in the grocery line who keeps banging her cart into him.

He fantasizes about a kind of street justice that involves outlandishly gory payback.
