10 gadgets that demonstrate the potential of the Internet of Music Things

Midem paid for part of Chris O’Brien’s travel to Cannes for the Midem Music Industry Festival, where he is participating as a startup competition judge. Our coverage remains objective.

The Internet of Things continues to be one of tech’s most closely watched phenomena. Everyone wants to stick a sensor into everything to control it and gather data.

Some of these can seem a little obscure, like smart objects to improve manufacturing logistics. But music is one area where we can all relate — and potentially benefit.

Baidu gets ticking with new search app for smartwatches

Chinese search giant Baidu has quietly launched a voice search app specially built for Android Wear smartwatches. The Baidu Watch app accepts voice input and gives back a snippet of text that displays on a smartwatch screen. Users can opt to tap the watch screen to open up a normal web page on their smartphones.

The audience for this new app is likely rather small, due to the wide-scale censoring of Google services in China, which makes it a challenge to use a Google-focused system like Android Wear.

Baidu

“Android-based smartwatches don’t work smoothly in China and that might discourage people from buying smartwatches,” says Kaiser Kuo, Baidu’s director of international communications. That’s why Baidu decided to make the app for China’s smartwatch enthusiasts, he explains to Tech in Asia. Kuo adds that future updates to the Baidu Watch app will see more search result widgets optimized for the watch screen so that there’s less need to get more information from your smartphone. Plus, the team is working on simple reminders that a user can give themselves or even send to a friend. “Like, a reminder to drink more water,” Kuo says.

Xiaomi to raise over $1B, valuation could reach over $45B

NEWS BRIEF: Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is raising over US$1 billion in an investment round led by All-Stars Investment, a tech fund run by ex-Morgan Stanley analyst Richard Ji. Wall Street Journal broke the news, citing a person familiar with the matter. Xiaomi declined to comment. The round could close as early as Monday, and would bring Xiaomi’s valuation to over US$45 billion.

Other investors in the round include Russian investment firm DST Global and Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC. Both previously invested in Xiaomi. Another investor is Yunfeng Capital, a private equity fund affiliated to Alibaba founder Jack Ma.

Offline flash sales

Barra said that Xiaomi will do offline sales soon in India – sort of. The plan is to do what he calls offline flash sales (mirroring its online sales system) in India for the Redmi 4G. That will be done in partnership with Airtel. Look out for that early next month.

There will be more offline sales in Indonesia, such as the store-based sales done by local partner Erajaya. He reveals Xiaomi once sold 2,000 phones in one day in offline sales in just two stores.

Fewer than five percent of phones sold in Indonesia are sold online, he states, so there are challenges to being focused on ecommerce. “Perhaps we can be a driver” of ecommerce, he says.

He went on to explain that Xiaomi wants to work very closely with the tech ecosystems in India and Indonesia in terms of startups, apps, and services. There are no deals sorted out yet, but he will talk a lot with startups to cook up something. An example from China is the way Xiaomi created the MiBand in partnership with a Chinese startup.

“It makes perfect sense to build in Indonesia,” he says – but that’s advice for hardware startups, not a statement related to Xiaomi. “I have high hopes for manufacturing in Indonesia,” he adds, and Barra advises local startups to get a Raspberry Pi and start iterating hardware in the same way they do with software.

Privacy kerfuffle

“We can’t serve everything from China,” he says, due to issues like high latency and time-outs. That’s why Xiaomi opened a data center in Singapore and the US, and might do the same for India.

If “one of the indirect benefits of this move” is that non-China customers feel safer about privacy (avoiding the grasp of China’s government), then that’s a bonus, he explains. That’s a reference to the fears over Xiaomi’s online messaging service sending back data to China, which prompted the company to make the service an optional feature for people outside China.

Xiaomi currently sells phones in six countries aside from its home in China.

Xiaomi founder Lei Jun invests in huge housing project for young startups

Xiaomi founder Lei Jun is investing an RMB 100 million (US$16.3 million) series A round of funding into You+ International Youth Apartments. According to Techweb, the investment was completed in August.

You+, an apartment project aimed at entrepreneurs, was co-founded by Su Di, the founder of Beijing’s iconic Garage Cafe, a popular coworking space in the Zhongguancun tech and startup district of the city. Seeing that Chinese startups often cluster together in small areas, he wanted to create the housing project as a utopia for entrepreneurs.

While users are surfing on the internet, the WiFi connection tab will be displayed at the homepage of WeChat, enabling users to browse the details of connected public accounts in one click. In addition, WeChat will offer merchants various data in fields such as like daily visitors, or sent alerts to customers when they are approaching the stores.
