Alibaba’s history in 9 photos

In honor of Alibaba’s IPO on the New York Stock Exchange, today Alibaba posted a series of photos on its Weibo page that briefly tracks the company’s history. We’ve posted and translated a few choice clips below, including one showing Alibaba employees donning face masks during the 2003 SARS outbreak, and one showing founder Jack Ma taking a stroll with Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang.

In the fall of 1999, 18 young people gathered in a West Hangzhou apartment to start a business. They emptied their savings, pooled together RMB 500,000, and set forth to “create a global Chinese company” – Alibaba.

本日、Alibabaはニューヨーク証券取引所への上場を記念して、Webioサイトに同社の歴史がわかる数枚の写真をアップいたしました。

2003: Upon the SARS outbreak, Alibaba employees self-quarantined and worked from home. During this time, Taobao quietly launched. Amidst that era of determination and fearlessness, we remember May 10th as “Alibaba Day.”

Alibaba IPO will make it biggest internet company in China and third biggest in the world

Alibaba will be the third-biggest internet company in the world by market cap if analysts’ estimates hold up. It will surpass both US ecommerce giant Amazon and Chinese rival Tencent.

Chinese companies take up four of the top 10 spots and make up three of the top six. Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) sits at number six, while JD (NASDAQ:JD) rounds out the top 10. Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) leads by a long shot with nearly twice the market cap as runner up Facebook (NASDAQ:FB).

アリババはIPOによって中国では最大の、世界では第３位のインターネット会社になる。
また、アナリストの評価が正しければ時価総額でも世界第３位になり、アメリカの巨人Amazonと同じ中国のライバルであるTencentを
しのぐ存在にあるであろう。

中国企業は上位１０社に４社が入り、そしてその上位６社のうち３社を占めているのである。
JD(NASDAQ:JD)は１０位につけている一方、Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU)は６位にいる。
グーグル(NASDAQ:GOOGL) は時価総額で２倍の大差で２位Facebook(NASDAQ:FB)を引き離している。

As Alibaba enters the fray, the landscape looks to be a lot more even between the US and China, but neither have made significant headway into the others’ markets. That could soon change, though. Alibaba is eyeing markets in Southeast Asia and the west, while Baidu entered a handful of countries outside China. Alibaba is set to list on the New York Stock Exchange on September 19 under the symbol BABA.

アリババの競争への参入により、アメリカと中国の力関係は五分五分になったかに見えるが、
どちらも相手国の市場においては大きな成果をあげるにいたっていないである。
しかしながら、この状態はすぐに変わるであろう。
Baiduは中国外の一握りの国々に参入したにすぎないが、アリババは東南アジアまた西アジアの市場までも視野に入れているのである。
