JustGiving shared their latest insight on the growth of social and mobile at the Institute of Fundraising Digital Fundraising Conference, in a session called ‘Mobile and social – why our phone is your new BFF‘.

Meikka: Luxury Handbag Rental Service

China has become world’s largest market for luxury products in the wake of the economic development and the formation of middle class. However, the daunting prices of luxury handbags are still not affordable for every handbag-conscious fashionistas.

Meikka, a Chinese Rent the Runway clone focused on handbags, can ease the torture of luxury enthusiasts by allowing them to hire designer handbags such as Channel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, etc., for a fraction of the retail price. The platform will deliver and pick up the handbags from customers who can rent with around 0.6% of the retail price per day.

中国は経済成長や中流階級の発生によって、今や高級嗜好品の世界最大の市場となっている。しかし、目が飛び出るような金額の高級バックは、未だにハンドバッグを愛するすべての人の手に届くものではない。

Rent the Runwayの中国版でハンドバックに特化しているMeikkaは、Channel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Fendiなどのデザインバッグを販売価格の何分の一という低価格でレンタルすることで、そういった嗜好品の愛好家の心を満たしている。サイトの基盤を使ってハンドバックを利用者から受け渡しや引き取りを行い、小売価格の約0.6%で一日ハンドバックをレンタルできる。

The service is ideal for glamorous one-time evening bags that people wouldn’t normally buy. Meikka also aims to transform their services to a pre-sales experience for luxury handbags for everyday wear.

The company planned to establish cooperation relationship with luxury brands and become a sales channel, because the customers may eventually buy the product if they like the rented ones.

このサービスは、一度しか使わないので普段なかなか購入することがない、豪華なイブニングバッグにぴったりだ。さらにMeikkaは普段使いの高級バッグの購入前の利用体験にもサービスを転用することを狙っている。

当社は高級ブランドの販売チャンネルになり提携する計画を立てている。利用者は、レンタル品が気に入れば後に購入に至る可能性があるからだ。

Meikka also aims to add social shopping services by introducing social networking platforms, consultation websites, apps and forums to increase user stickiness. Moreover, the firm planned to partner up with fashion bloggers to better promote their services.

Meikka targets to become a domestic trailblazer in luxury product rental service, which is still a new business in China. Several domestic e-commerce website focused on luxury products, such as Secoo, also launched luxury product renting projects to explore this business.

さらに、Meikkaはソーシャルネットワーク基盤を導入し、コンサルウェブサイト、アプリ、掲示板を作成することで、ユーザ同士がより強くつながる状態を目指す。そしてさらには、当社のサービスをより広く宣伝するためにファッションブロガーと提携することも計画している。

Meikkaは中国ではまだ新しいビジネスである嗜好品のレンタルサービスにおいて、中国内の草分け的存在になろうとしている。他にはSeccoなどの嗜好品を取り扱う国内eコマースウェブサイトも、商品のレンタルプロジェクトを立ち上げるなどしてこのビジネスの可能性を探っている。

A/B testing is getting cheaper, and startups should take advantage

Until recently, A/B testing was a service usually restricted to the big companies who could afford it. But at last month’s China Axlr8r Demo Day, accelerator graduate Splitforce showed off a solution for small- and medium-sized mobile app developers to incorporate a lightweight A/B testing SDK into their products. It’s free for apps with up to 1,000 daily active users. The ability to test two variants simultaneously (e.g. a red button and a blue button appear in the same app on two different phones) and real-time analytics are what Splitforce hopes will differentiate it from its fellow budget competitors.

安価になったA/Bテスト、スタートアップは利用するべき

つい最近まで、A/Bテストは費用がかかるため大企業のみに限定されたサービスであった。しかし、先月のChina Axlr8r Demo Dayでaccelerator出身のSplitforceは小中規模のアプリ開発者が簡易版のA/BテストSDKを商品に組み込める方法を提示した。一日のアクティブユーザが1,000人未満のアプリには無償で提供される。Splitforceは2つのバリアントの同時テスト能力（例えば、同じアプリを立ち上げた2つの携帯電話に赤と青のボタンが表示されるなど）とリアルタイムの分析で、競合他社との差別化を狙っている。

The company got a lot of positive feedback at Demo Day, with one former Axlr8r mentor remarking that it’s only a matter of time before they get copied in Silicon Valley. While that could prove troublesome for Splitforce, more competitors in the space means lower costs for the companies that use them. As accessibility to the constantly improving pool of A/B testing services increases for startups, so should the quality of those startups’ products.

当社はDemo Dayにて良い反応を多く得た。元Axlr8rのメンターからはSilicon Valleyに商品をコピーされるのは時間の問題だ、とのコメントがあった。Splitforceにとっては前途多難な話だが、利用者にとってはサービスの競合が増えれば費用がさらに下がることになる。改良を重ねるA/Bテストの活用が容易になるに従い、スタートアップの商品の質も高まるはずである。

2 Japanese companies launched affiliate platforms in Indonesia in the last 2 weeks. Why?

Within the span of just two weeks, two Japan-based companies made moves into the Indonesian market by launching somewhat similar online affiliate advertising platforms focusing mainly on cost-per-action (CPA) clicks. The first of the two companies is advertising firm Adways Indonesia, with its product SmartDriver. Just a fortnight later, Interspace Indonesia launched its AccessTrade. What challenges await these two firms in Indonesia?

わずか2週間の間に、日本を拠点とする2社がクリック報酬型（CPA）のオンラインアフィリエイト広告プラットフォームという何処か似通ったサービスでインドネシア市場に乗り込んだ。2社のうち、まず広告会社のAdways IndonesiaがSmartDriverという商品をリリース。そのわずか2週間後にInterspace Indonesiaが当社商品のAccessTradeをリリースした。この2社を待ち構える試練とは一体どのようなものなのか？

CPA is an affiliate advertising method whereby advertisers pay sum of money in return of a determined course of action from the users. This action can come in the form of purchases or filling out a survey. Publishers will integrate ads from advertisers on their page. And when a user comes to the publisher’s page and makes an action set by the advertiser – like clicking on the ads and then making purchases on the advertiser’s site – then the publisher will earn income from that action based on the price that had been set by the advertisers.

CPAとは、広告主があらかじめ定めた行動をユーザーがとった際に対価が支払われる広告手法である。行動の例は購入やアンケート記入などが挙げられる。まず、ウェブページの持ち主は複数の広告を自身のページに掲載する。そして、ユーザーがページを訪れ、広告主があらかじめ定めた行動―例えば、広告をクリックし、広告主のページで購入するなど―をした際に、ウェブサイトの持ち主は広告主が設定した金額に応じて収入を得る。

As of December 2012, there are reportedly only 7.8 million credit card holders in Indonesia. While that number alone is already bigger than the population of Singapore, it’s just a mere three percent of Indonesia’s whole population. Furthermore, given the relative newness of credit cards, it’s likely that only a handful of those Indonesians will use their cards to make online purchases.

Both Adways Indonesia’s Hayato Takano and Interspace Indonesia’s Takashi Matsuura second Suhaili’s concerns, but they are confident that Indonesia’s long term e-commerce growth makes the country a worthwhile market to be in.

2012年12月時点でのインドネシアにおけるクレジットカード所有者は7千8百万人であるという報告がある。この人数はすでにシンガポールの人口を上回っているが、インドネシアの人口のわずか3%にしか過ぎない。さらに、クレジットカードシステム自体の新しさも相まって、カード所有者のごく一部しかカードでのオンライン購入をしないと考えられる。

Adways IndonesiaのHayato Takano氏、Interspace IndonesiaのTakashi Matsuura氏の両氏ともSuhaili氏の懸念に同意しているが、今後の長期的なeコマースの成長によってインドネシア市場は参入に値する価値があると確信している。

Science Networking Service Guokr Joins Translation Project of MOOC Platform Coursera

Guokr, a Chinese popular science social networking service website, signed cooperation agreement with Coursera, a leading massive open online course (MOOC) platform, to translate the English courses on the platform into Chinese (source in Chinese).

中国で人気のある科学ネットワークウェブサイトGuokrは、業界を代表するオンラインコース（MOOC）プラットフォームを持つCourseraと協定を結び、英語で行われるコースを中国語に翻訳する（原文は中国語）。

The richness and diversity of books and materials written by English, a universal language, cannot be paralleled by that of other languages. The courses on Coursera, a leading public course platform which cooperates with 87 partners and offers 444 courses as of this writing, are mostly streamed in English. Translation becomes a critical link for non-English native speakers to gain wider access to knowledge.

国際的な言語である英語で書かれた書籍や資料の豊富さや幅広さは、その他の言語のそれとは比較にならない。公開講座のプラットフォームにおいて業界トップであるCourseraが持つ87か所の提携先や444個（記事作成時）の講座のほとんどは英語で行われている。英語を母国語としない人にとって、知識をより幅広く触れるためには翻訳が必要不可欠な架け橋となる。

We just received the cinnamon boxes from the village. Most of them are very good. The village made a change in the candle holders and and added some more holes to the pattern. It means that more light can come out. Can you please review the photos? Please let me know if this is OK for you. I am sorry that the designs is not exactly the same as the sample. This a problem that can happen when we work with village artists. Thank you.

Cooking Website Joins Hands with Organic Farms to Monetize User Base

Xiachufang, which means “to cook” (usually a homey meal), is a popular crowdsourced cooking website (also available on Android and iOS) in China for gourmet lovers and those passionate about cooking. On August 14, it launched a sub-channel, Youdiantian, which literally means “there are some fields”, to have another try in terms of monetization. Previously the site tried to make CPC/CPS-based commissions by directing users to ingredient retailers on Taobao, but it didn’t work well.

「料理をする」（主に家庭料理）という意味を持つXiachufangは、中国のグルメ嗜好家や料理好きを対象にしたクラウドソース型のサイトだ（AndroidとiOSでも利用可）。当サイトは8月14日に姉妹サイトとなるYoudiantian（「畑がある」という意味）をローンチし、新たな方法での収益拡大を目指す。以前にはTaobaoというサイトで食材の小売業におけるCPC/CPSベースの手数料事業を手掛けたが、失敗に終わっている。

At launch, Youdiantian includes four Beijing- and Shanghai-based small organic farms and will be introducing more. Visitors can make orders on the shopping platform and browse the farms’ profiles which introduce the farms’ inventories, farming philosophies and more—things that the environmentally conscious consumers want to know about their ingredients.
