The 5 Southeast Asian startup winners at DEMO ASEAN

This past weekend has been huge for Vietnam’s startup scene with the running of DEMO ASEAN. The event, which has been organized for over 20 years across the world and is at the heart of the Silicon Valley, has finally come to Southeast Asia. All the cool folks from Hanoi came down to Ho Chi Minh city, and entrepreneurs from across Southeast Asia including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar came to pitch, network and participate.

The event gave out five awards for the top five startups that pitched, of a total of over 35 startups. Each of the winning teams got free tickets to the USA. Here’s the top five:

1. SmartBike (Vietnam): The big winner of DEMO is a handy new device. This startup designs two small devices that can be placed inside of a motorbike to prevent theft and track the location of the motorbike. One device is cheaper, and costs about $25. It has weaker specs than the more costly one, but the other one is still quite cheap at $75 and brings more tracking capabilities and hardware features. These guys already have a competitor in the space by the name of SetechViet.

2. 1Pay.vn (Vietnam): This startup is focused mainly on mobile payment. Arguably, it’s one of the leading mobile payment platforms in Vietnam. Quang, the founder, said on stage that it is on track to hit $50 million in transactions by the end of the year. I wrote about this startup last month.

3. Builk (Thailand): The former winner of Echelon in 2012 is a construction platform company out of Bangkok. At DEMO ASEAN, the company released its new mobile app. We grabbed an interview with them in June.

In this case, the team is very focused on getting more comprehensive information about Myanmar to tourists. VisitMM is another startup that is also doing travel in Myanmar, but in online booking.

5. Asva The Monkey (Cambodia): One of Cambodia’s premier mobile gaming teams. I already wrote about these guys and many in the audience would have been surprised if this team didn’t get an award. The design is excellent and the gameplay very fun.

4. Digital Tour Guide (ミャンマー): 若い小さなスタートアップで、マッピングとデータとを観光に結びつけたことを手がけている ミャンマーから出た複数のスタートアップの一つなので、 現在マレーシアの人たちが興味を持っている観光ケーススタディーに取り入れているところがとても興味深い。この場合、チームは観光に関してミャンマーについての包括的な情報もっと得ることに重点を置いている。VisitMMは、別のスタートアップで、こちらもマレーシアで観光を行っているが、オンライン予約についてである。

5. Asva The Monkey (カンボジア): カンボジアの高級モバイルゲームチームの一つである。 彼らについてはすでに採り上げているが、視聴者の多くは、このチームが賞を取らなかったことに驚いているだろう。デザインは優れていて、ゲームも非常に楽しめる。

BONUS: 3 student winners

In addition to the more than 35 startups that pitched to DEMO’s judges, 12 Vietnamese student teams pitched. These undergraduate teams had two minutes to make their case, instead of the standard five-minute stage time. Each winning team got a cash prize. Here are the three student winners:

1. MultiGlove (awarded $5,000) – A hardware device that basically allows you to control objects by moving your hand around in space.

2. Street Foods Guide (awarded $2,500) – An app for identifying street food in the cities of Vietnam.

3. TixZone (awarded $2,000) – A platform for selling tickets online.

More than 50% of Indian netizens access internet via mobile (INFOGRAPHIC)

India is poised to become the second largest mobile internet market globally (after China) within the next four years. Effective Measure, a media planning and audience profiling company, has released the results of its latest digital audience data for the Indian market.

Effective Measure’s research shows mobile is the tool of choice in accessing online content. In July, 51 percent of Indian users accessed the internet from a mobile phone, while five percent accessed the internet from a tablet. The majority of Indian netizens are married, and most of those have at least one child. Combine that with the 77 percent who went to university, and you get a sizable market of well-educated (and probably well-off) parents online.

It’s also worth noting that India’s overall internet penetration is only around 12 percent of its total population, but that number is expected to triple from 125 million to 330 million by 2016 [1].

Alibaba — Taobao Classmates
Tabao’s ultimate goal is to have every business to sell products, physical or virtual, on its online marketplace. Nobody would feel surprised at the launch of a marketplace for selling online courses or offline events recently but wonder what took it so long.

It is reported that the sales of education-related products on Taobao before the launch of Taobao Classmates was one billion yuan (about $160 mn) in the first half of 2013.

Netease

William Ding, CEO of NetEase, has been bullish on online education. His company, with over 90% of the total revenues from online games though, tapped into online education as early as in 2010 with a launch of Open Courses program which provides educational videos for free. It licensed recorded video courses from US universities and hired translators to add Chinese subtitles. Coursera’s courses for users in China are hosted by Netease.

In late 2012 the company launched Cloud Class, a platform for users to take online classes and literally study there. Youdao Dictionary, an digital dictionary under Netease, also has a feature for Chinese users to learn foreign languages.

RiMa Helps You Avoid Buying Fake Products

While many Chinese and even foreigners do enjoy buying counterfeit luxury bags or designer goods in China, food frauds have become a huge concern of people living in China.

RiMa is to tackle this problem. Literally it means “sharp code” in Chinese that consumers will be told whether a good is fake by scanning the code on it with RiMa app or type it in. As the code on each piece of good is unique, the app would remind you to be cautious if it has been scanned once — chances are a consumer is about to buy the very piece after it is found authentic.

RiMa started with baby & mother care products which Chinese particularly care about especially after a series of milk scandals. Categories like wine are also the company’s first choices.

It needs brands to provide all the code numbers of their products. Incentives for them to do so include RiMa would, in turn, provides them with consumer data, such as where (i.e. which department stores) consumers buy their products, and services like they are allowed to send consumers e-coupons.

The shape and two-tone color of the phone are consistent with previous leaks, although the low-resolution video and lack of any views other than from the front make it difficult to assess whether it is indeed a legitimate iPhone 5C or another device wrapped in a colored bumper or shell.

Finally, C Technology has also posted a solo photo showing a green iPhone 5C in its packaging, in line with other photos from the past few days although without a sticker illustrating the iOS 7 home screen on a color-matched background.

Apple's iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S are both expected to be revealed at a media event on September 10, with the two new devices expected to be released in the first wave of markets on September 20.
