Smartphones Continue to Eat into Compact Camera Market

Much has been said about the effects of the mobile revolution on console gaming. The past few years have not been kind to Japanese game console makers especially, as casual players get their gaming fix with mobile titles like Angry Birds and Plants vs Zombies. But smartphones are having an impact in other industries beyond gaming. Now that their cameras are much improved, point-and-shoot cameras are starting to see serious effects.

The Sydney Morning Herald cites numbers from Japan’s Camera and Imaging Products Association that say global shipments of digital cameras from Japanese companies are down 42 percent in September compared to the same time the year before. While some of this is due to a high yen and widespread boycotts of Japanese products in China, the effects that smartphones have had on the industry shouldn’t be underestimated.

But as smartphones up their camera capabilities, camera companies will try to make smarter point-and-shoot models, with features like wi-fi connectivity, cloud storage, and social sharing becoming more common on cameras.

Samsung’s recent Galaxy Camera is a good example of this. But the Korean maker is in a good position to experiment with smart features given its dominance in the smartphone business so far. Other traditional camera makers likely won’t be as quick (although it’s good to see Nikon trying).

But given that many high-end smartphones are beginning to rival the photo quality of many compact camera, it a hard for manufactures to expect consumers to buy both. Just like many casual gamers have made a choice to move away from consoles, smartphones are only going to become a more attractive choice for casual photographers.

Weixin Reinstates Real-Name User Verification, Allows Weibo Users to Auto-Verify

Tencent’s mobile messaging behemoth Weixin (known as WeChat outside China) is, like other Chinese messaging services, legally responsible to some extent for the content its users share. And although the service is extremely popular, users have expressed concerns about how safe it is when strangers can pretend to be whoever they want. For these reasons, the company had previously initiated an optional real-name verification system, but recently suspended it temporarily.

Now, it’s back open with a brand-new auto-verification option: users who have verified accounts on Sina Weibo or Tencent Weibo can log in via those accounts to have their Weixin accounts verified automatically.

The new verification system appears to be only in effect within China, and should not affect overseas users of WeChat in any way.

The system is a smart move on Tencent’s part, for several reasons. First, it greatly reduces the workload of the verification process, which would otherwise require each verification request to be processed by a Tencent employee. Second, it increases the ease of verification for new Weixin users in China and thus increases the likelihood that they will choose to verify their accounts. Finally, it allows users who would prefer to, ahem, circumnavigate real-name verification to verify via their Sina Weibo accounts (since Sina’s implementation of real-name requirements has been pretty half-assed by the company’s own admission).

As a chat app, the need for any political censorship on Weixin that would be facilitated by a real-name system is probably not as significant as it is on weibo, but the location-based nature of the app could facilitate stalking in such a way that real-name verification might become something that users actually demand. If that happens, allowing users to verify their identities via Weibo could turn out to be a bit of a mistake, as users are well aware of the holes in weibo real-name registration. But if that doesn’t happen, this change will have been a smart move for Tencent to ease the verification process both for users and for itself.

Startup Genome: Abundance of startups in Australia, but not enough support

The first Australian startup ecosystem report, a collaboration between Startup Genome, Pollenizer, and Deloitte Private, was released yesterday. Involving data from over 1,000 startups, the report, titled ‘Silicon Beach — Building Momentum’, provides a snapshot of Australia’s startup ecosystems.

What the data indicates is that while the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well, Australia’s entrepreneurs don’t have the support they need yet to take their startups to the next level.

A look at the global rankings (below) by Startup Genome indicate that Australia’s startups can stand toe -to-toe with the world’s best in terms of talent, output and differentiation. Sydney has even ranked number one globally for being trendsetters.

Yet the ecosystem does not seem to be maximizing their entrepreneurs’ capabilities. While Australia’s startups are forward-looking and cutting edge, they raise 100 times less than Silicon Valley startups in the scale stage.

And for some reason, despite the availability of government grants and R&D tax concessions, only 39% of startups have applied for these schemes. The government will have to figure out a way to reach more startups.

The tax environment makes offering employees company share options difficult, resulting in startups finding difficulty in rewarding employees for taking entrepreneurial risk.

The result is that Australia ranks lowly in having a visionary mindset and high risk tolerance, as well as in performance. The Australian report supplements this by adding that startups in the country tend to be the integrator type, which refers to high-certainty, product-centric, SME-focused businesses that move consumer innovation to enterprises.

Finally, the report gave some suggestions on how stakeholders can improve the ecosystem. Governments can make their grants easier for startups to apply, corporations can seek out startups as acquisition targets, while entrepreneurs can strive to be more ambitious.

With AirBnB Not on the Ground in Japan, Homerent Enjoys Home Field Advantage

AirBnB may be big worldwide, but not quite so much in Japan. That’s according to Daniel Saito, co-founder of Homerent. When asked about Homerent being in a competitive space that’s quickly being matured by challengers like AirBnB, Daniel told me:

Yes AirBnB is in Japan, Wimdu is in Japan. But they are all remotely trying to run the business out from their respective headquarters.

Seeing this, Daniel believes that Homerent has home ground advantage in Japan. He further explained:

[We’re] able to work directly with the Japanese marketplace where collaborative consumption has always been difficult to adopt. We managed to build a trust-based platform and help mitigate safety issues, help support issues in multiple languages (Japanese, French, and English), and assist in the cultural barriers. We also are aware of local jurisdictions and are compliant with local laws and practices.

While the business model of Homerent is somewhat similar to its competitors, the unique Japanese culture has made it hard for foreign businesses to thrive there. Daniel believes most Japanese wouldn’t rely on foreign services that aren’t even based in Japan to rent out their houses. Early traction at Homerent seems to suggest that there could be demand for a Japanese-run (or at least Japan-based) home rentals platform. The startup, which is currently self-funded, started operations in September and has seen its users rack up a total of about 400 nights rented in various properties – and that’s with only minimal promotion.

In a nice boost to the team’s spirits, Homerent recently managed to grab the U.S. Ambassador’s Award at the Entrepreneur Awards Japan 2012. Daniel said:

If anything, this nomination and winning this prestigious award validates the business and dedication of the team behind Homerent.jp.

Perhaps some of you guys might have heard of Daniel’s name familiar at our Startup Asia Jakarta conference in June. Daniel was actually one of the founding members at MySQL who now also runs SkySQL, a competitor of Oracle Japan. And yes, Daniel is running two startups now and is in a confident mood that he can do well on both fronts with great people helping him run the show.

In a glorious recipe posted to Food.com that has been making the rounds on Twitter, a frustrated cook offers a recipe for ice cubes, nothing that is may come in handy for “families who have members who don’t know how or have forgotten how to make ice when the ice tray is empty.” The rundown proceeds as expected-water, freezer-and it’s funny enough on its own: a passive-aggressive plea to refill trays that anyone can get behind.
But then the commenter get ahold of it, and the magic begins.
“This recipe is horrible!” declares Chef #1406275.”Maybe I should have left them in longer than two minutes (the recipe does not say how long to leave them in the freezer so I just kind of guessed) but mine came out all watery

5 Lessons Learned from Chinese Startup Failures

They say you learn more from failure than you do from success. And that appears to be the theory behind a new blog post from Sinobeat Capital managing partner and Fortune China columnist Ding Chenling. In his very long post, Ding lays out the stories of 17 Chinese startups that ultimately failed, and breaks down the lessons learned. The whole thing is a bit too long for our purposes, but here are a few of the most interesting startups (and lessons) Ding picked.

Company: Fanfou
Lesson: Startups shouldn’t work in areas that could be politically sensitive.

Fanfou is actually still around, but these days it pales in comparison to its competitors Sina and Tencent Weibo, even though it was around long before either of those services. Fanfou was China’s first Twitter clone, and back in 2009 it seemed to have the world at its fingertips. 300,000 users and growing, the company had netted a big investment from HP. And although the company was doing its best to block “sensitive” words and keep political speech to a minimum, it was blocked (along with a host of other sites) following the Urumqi riots in July, 2009.

Lesson: Don’t get cocky, don’t waste money.

MySee looked like a company that had it all. P2P video services were hot. Investments were pouring in from all over the place. But the company burned money too fast. A few dozen employees were costing hundreds of thousands of dollars per month, and the company went all in on an expansive, ostentatious office that cost nearly $200,000 to decorate. But it also had to spend hundreds of thousands on video content, and in just a few months, it burned through nearly all of a $2 million investment.
