Compared to "The Lady Eve" or "The Palm Beach Story," where the action is so often soundstage-bound and made lush and gauzy through star-focused three-point lighting (which makes the slapstick pratfalls all the more unexpected and hilarious), this scene from "July" is harder-edged, shot outdoors, full of large and busy crowd shots where the actors are often dominated by the landscape.
Look how hard the outline between Dick Powell's face and the taxicab is at the start, and how the shadow falls across his right cheek, how the fabric of the street stand is torn, how the eye travels to the two men standing next to it in the lower left corner, one's work-cap and the other's fedora cutting up the frame.

Russell's film is big and big-hearted and more than a little messy, but that's apropos given the over-the-top characters, their insatiable greed and their brazen schemes. The film is probably also a tad overlong, but it's a blast to hang out with these people, and Russell creates such an infectiously zany vibe around them that if even you notice the running time, you probably won't mind. Yuanxiao Festival or the Lantern Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month, fourteen days after Chinese New Year's Day (around the end of January and the beginning of February). In the country and town, people celebrate it heartily. For some reason, there is often a bigger celebration in the rural areas, especially in the North.

Other folk customs of the Lantern Festival include attending the lantern fair, guessing riddles and performing traditional festivities.

Lapine saves his biggest surprise for us during the second part of this number, when Sondheim appears as a Broadway producer chastising the lead characters. Who better to sing a litany of actual criticisms of Stephen Sondheim songs than Sondheim himself?

the still-hilarious 1997 comedy that was both silly and sweet and allowed clueless female characters to be ditzy and shallow while remaining true to each other. Despite Raphael and Wilson's fondness for pushing the humor into brash, crass directions (as evidenced by that opening shot), their characters clearly have an innate decency and a loyalty to each other that's heartening.
At the same time, "Ass Backwards" is a welcome departure from the script they co-wrote for 2009's "Bride Wars," an ugly example of longtime female friends tearing each other apart for the sake of broad laughs.

After establishing the circumstances surrounding the birth of Philomena's son, Anthony—including a fairground interlude with a handsome lad who unknowingly becomes a father, and a Mother Superior who refuses her any medical relief during an excruciating breech birth ("Pain is her penance," she declares)—the movie concentrates on bringing together Philomena and Coogan's snobby Oxford-educated journalist Martin Sixsmith, who's been booted from his lofty post as an political adviser and reduced to doing human interest stories. Though he would rather be writing a book on Russian history, he offers to help locate Anthony in return for writing an article based on her experiences.

Their personalities initially clash: she is open-hearted, literal and chummy, he is smug, sarcastic and condescending. Often, it's almost like an Abbott and Costello routine. Whenever Philomena cheerily introduces Martin, she calls him "Martin Sixsmith, News at 10." He corrects her by saying he worked for the BBC, then follows with a mention that he ran the Moscow bureau and also covered Washington, D.C. If the movie has a failing, it's that the humor occasionally plays a little too on-the-nose cute, what with Philomena cooing over the bathrobes she found in her hotel room and phoning Martin to see if he needs one, or chatting up Mexican food servers about the joys of nachos.
