日本語スキルは、仕事の取引、接客や交渉程度のパターン化されたお決まりのビジネス英語ができれば十分だと私は思いますよ。
今までの私の上司のうち何人かは外国人で、彼らは皆日本語を流暢に話していましたが、あくまでビジネス日本語であって、ほんのちょっと微妙な言い回しなどになると、もう全然話が通じませんでした。日本人と結婚して何年も日本で暮らしている外国人達でもそうです。
中身の濃い深い話は私含めて友人と『英語で』話せばいいと思います。

As for Japanese skills, I think it is enough to be able to speak business English such as some kind of phrase for dealings, customer service and negotiation.
Some of my previous bosses were not Japanese and they spoke Japanese fluently, but it was business Japanese.
So when using difficult wording just a little, they couldn't figure out the meaning at all, even if (s)he is foreigner who got married with Japanese and has lived in Japan for many years.
I think it will be better that we talk with "English" when we talks something deep.
