variety of purposes when giving a speech, but usually a speech has one of three general purposes-to entertain, to inform, or to persuade. Entertainment, of couse, is seldom the reason for speechs given by military personnel.
Most speaking in the military is done to make something clear or to achieve agreement concerning a plan or policy. The response sought in either case is usually understanding in preparation for some suggested action. Thus, almost all cases, military speeches fit into two basic divisions: informative speaking and persuasive speaking. Ininformative speeches, the two major sub-divisions of importance to the military are the briefing and the oral report. These two types are used regularly.

話す目的は様々だが、通常、楽しませる、説明する、説得する、これら3点のうちいずれかがその目的である。勿論軍人にとって、楽しませることが話の目的であることは少ない。

軍隊で話すことは、主にプラン、ポリシーの中の何らかを明確にし、合意を得るためになされる。いずれの場合も、求められるものは提案された行動の準備に対する理解である。即ち、ほぼ全ての場合において、軍で話すことは基本的に説明、説得のいずれかに当てはまる。そのうち、説明的であることが重要な二大カテゴリーは指令と口頭報告である。軍隊における話の多くはこのいずれかといえる。
