Go-shugi bukuro (gift envelope containing notes)
In Japan we give it to a bridal couple.
The envelope (go-shugi bukuro) contains usually thirty thousand yen or ten thousand yen in cash.
I think you probably wonder why Japanese give such a large amount of money.
Usually in Japan a wedding ceremony becomes a big party because marriage means a new connection of the families of a groom and a bride. The cost of the party, therefore, will be high: 3 to 3.5 million yen on an average (some 80 participants).
Therefore the people invited to the party give Go-shugi (money) to the couple both as their sign of congratulation and for economic help.
