Microsoft's mission was elegantly precise: 'a computer on every desk and in every home'. The company didn't have carved words in stone, or the corporate equivalent of the US Declaration of Independence, instead it had Bill Gates, the company's resident luminary and global IT guru.
In the mid-to-l-ate 1990s he took this one step further by writing about the future of technology both in The Road Ahead and Business @ the Speed of Thought. This was a somewhat risky strategy, but Gates obviously felt obliged to live up to his image as the computer visionary.
