The Microsoft that Gates ran was not necessarily the most innovative company in the world, but its ability to take ideas and make, them into commercial propositions was second to none. What Bill Gates demonstrated many times over is that innovation and R&D are not necessarily the same thing. In many cases, the emphasis is on researching how customers want to use an application and developing a marketable product that meets their requirements. Pure innovation, Gates believed, was overrated. He preferred to look around for existing solutions which could then be refined, rather than to constantly reinvent the wheel.
