They went through a ritual to change their religion that is not Israeli to religion of Israel. This ritual was originated in such a way. The meaning of this ritual was to purify their sins by idolatry and also it was a sign that they were forgiven. Therefore, it was considered that this ritual was not needed for the Israeli people who were believers of the true god and therefore their sins were already purified and forgiven. However, John conducted the same ritual using water to Israeli people. The reason behind this was to identify who is the savior.
