What is intelligence, anyway? When I was in the army I received a kind of aptitude test that all soldiers took and, against an average of 100, scored 160. No one at the base had ever seen a figure like that and for two hours my achievement created a lot of interest. ( It didn't mean anything. The next day I was still in the lowest rank with a lowly job in the kitchen to show for my efforts.)

知性って一体何なのだろう？軍隊にいたとき、兵士が全員受ける適正テストのようなものを受けて、平均スコアが100のところ、僕のスコアは160だった。基地にいた他の誰もそんな点数は見たことはなかったし、僕が出したスコアはその後の２時間、大きな関心を呼んだ。（でもそんなことは意味がなかった。次の日も僕は相変わらず厨房で一番下っ端のランクの仕事をしていた。）
