The Mw = 7.8 November 2007 Tocopilla earthquake ruptured a subduction interface between the cities of Tocopilla and Antofagasta in North Chile. So far, 445 aftershocks have been relocated by a local seismic network. The aftershock zone depicts the plate interface dipping 20° east, with a width of about 40 km wide and broadening towards the south. Some shallow events located offshore of the Mejillones peninsula appear to have occurred above the slab interface, possibly suggestive of shallow crustal faulting.
The coseismic deformation field observed by satellite interferometry data is used to constrain the distribution of slip associated with the earthquake.

Mw=7、2007年11月8日のトコピヤの地震はチリ北部のトコピヤ市とアントファガスタ市間の沈み込み境界を破断した。これまでのところ、445回の余震が、地域の地震観測網により移動した。余震域は20°東に傾斜し、約40kmの幅で南に向かって広がったプレート境界を示している。メヒヨネス半島の沖合で発生した浅発地震の一部は、浅い地殻断層の可能性を示唆するスラブの境界上で発生しているようにみえる。
衛星干渉計のデータで観測された地震時変形場は、地震に伴う滑り分布を制約するのに使用される。
