We construct two hypothetical models: the first one considers a single thrust fault, and the second one considers the interaction of a thrust and a shallow crustal fault offshore of the Mejillones peninsula. Both inversion models are based on the aftershock distribution, and suggest that an area of ∼ 160 km by 50 km along the Nazca–South America convergent margin, between latitudes 22°S and 23.5°S, ruptured during the mainshock.

われわれは2つの仮説モデルを立てる。第1に単一の衝上断層と考える仮説、第2に衝上断層とメヒジョーネス半島沖の浅い地殻断層の相互作用と考える仮説である。反転したモデルはともに、余震の分布に基づいており、ナスカ-南米収束境界に沿った南緯22度から南緯23.5度の間の160km×50kmの地域が本震の間に破断したことを示している。
