本人は無実を訴えていたにもかかわらず、妻とその不倫相手を殺したとされる主人公のAnの獄中生活の様子とその後、無実が判明し、脱獄を実行するという物語につい目がいきがちだが、実はこの物語の書き手として登場している終身刑のレッドがアンディに会ったことによって自由と生きる希望を取り戻した話でもある。私には後者のメッセージの方が強く心を打たれた。そしてそのメッセージが強調されているように私は感じた映画の方が私は好印象をもった。特に映画の方が 脱獄を匂わせるシーンが少なかった事が理由だ。

Many people may think this story is all about An's life in prison after he was accused of killing his wife and a woman he had an affair with and his attempt to break out of prison after his innocence was proved. In fact, this story is also about Red, the death row inmate who is supposed to be the author of this story, regaining freedom and hope to live, thanks to his encounter with Andy. I was more impressed and moved by the latter. And I also think the movie version is better because it emphasized the latter.
In addition, movie version does not contain scenes of prison break attempts.
