蓮馨寺には、おびんづる様と呼ばれる十六羅漢(お釈迦様の16人の偉い弟子)の一人がおり、またの名を撫で仏とも言います。
彼はその神通力で病気の人や体の不自由な人を助け、欲の深い人や意地の悪い人を懲らし、心に悩み事を持つ人の為には仏様の教えを説いて、多くの人を救ったといいます。

おびんづる様の体に触ってその手で自分の体をなでれば、病気が治り頭も良くなると言われています。これが撫で仏という名の由来です。
蓮馨寺のおびんづる様は大勢の人に撫でられるので、二十五年に一度は塗り替えます。
