自動車のエンジン冷却水は、水と不凍液（クーラント）の混合液を用いる。
この冷却水はウォーターポンプにより、エンジンとラジエーターの間を循環しながら大気中にエンジンの熱を放出する。
エンジンの暖機が完了すると、冷却水はサーモスタットによって一定の温度範囲に保たれる。

熱交換する部品は、ヒーターコアと呼び、ラジエーターと同じ機能部品でエンジンで暖められた冷却水（クーラント）がヒーターコア内部のコルゲートチューブを通る際に、車室内の空気との熱交換を行う。

The part that exchanges heat is called heater core, a same functional part as a radiator, when the cooling water (coolant) is heated up by an engine passes through the corrugate tube inside the heater core, exchange heat with an air in the car.
