JISZ8103では、「標準器又は計測器が、より高位の標準によって次々と校正され、国家標準につながる経路が確立されていること」と定義されている。
製品のトレーサビリティは、製品の製造番号などから製造工場やロットなどを突き止められるが計測器のトレーサビリティは、校正記録の追跡であり、計測結果は含まれない。
トレーサブルとは、由来をたどることが出来るという意味である。
