炊事用のエネルギー消費量が増加しなかった背景には以下の理由が考えられる。まず食生活の充実は７０年代半ばまでに既に達成されていた。その時期までに炊事機器の効率改善はある程度進んでおり、７０年代以降の外食化やレトルト商品の普及もエネルギー消費を抑える方向に作用した。同時期、暖房用エネルギー消費の伸びも少なかった。理由としては暖房機器の普及が飽和していったこと、それらの熱効率改善が進んだことがある。暖房機器保有数は増加し、暖房を行う住空間は拡大したが、それらの影響は限定的であった。

It is possible to assume the following reasons why energy consumption for cooking did not increase. Firstly, the dietary habit has reached it's peak in mid 70's. Until that period, the improvement of cooking appliances efficiency has progressed to an extent. After the 70's, the popularity of eating out and retort products reduced the rate of energy consumption to a downward trend. Meanwhile, the growth of energy consumption on heaters were also low. To summarize, the reasons are the use of heating systems had saturated and the improvement of heating efficiency was high. Although, the number of the heaters increased and the living space which it heats became larger, it's effect on energy consumption is limited.
