高度成長時代前期における家庭エネルギー消費の増加率は大きくはなかった。それまでの主要エネルギーであった木質エネルギーと石炭を利用する機器の熱効率と、それに置き換わった電力、ガス、石油をエネルギー源とする機器との熱効率との間には大きな差があった。よって有効エネルギーの観点からはエネルギー消費の増大があったが、物量ベースのエネルギー消費量はそれほど増えなかった。旧来のエネルギー源は１９５３年において全エネルギー消費量の８０％以上を占めていたが、１９７１年には１０％以下となった。

The increasing rate of the household energy consumption was not big at the early high-growth era. There was a big difference between the thermal efficiency　of equipments using the wood energy and the coal which used to be main resources and that using the alternatives such as electricity, gas, or petro. That means the energy increased from the aspect of effective energy, while it did not on a pysical quantitive basis. The conventional　energy resources occupied 80% of the entire energy consumption in 1953, which decreased to less than 10% in 1971.
