語源の「maiden」は乙女、未婚の女性という意味で、過去に若い女性が結婚前には奉公に出されていたことに由来する。そこから、乙女が女性奉公人・使用人の意味となった。

狭義では（特にサブカルチャー/オタク的文脈において）個人宅で主に住み込みで働く女性使用人（いわゆる「メイドさん」）を指す。
