All the same, as I drove out of Nouakchott for my first ever Saharan expedition, I could not help noticing the quantities of plastic bags littering the desert, along with discarded tires and even rusty carcasses of cars.

After an hour's drive north, the acacias and scrubby bushes gave way to low beige sand dunes – the classic image I expected of the Sahara. Our 4x4 turned onto a track to the west and a few minutes later, we were speeding by the vast sapphire expanse of the Atlantic. Soon we stopped and pitched our tent, a spacious, hand-sewn traditional Mauritanian home, just where the dunes seemed to have halted their seaward advance.

De todos modos, mientras conducía desde Nouakchottpara mi primera expedición al Sahara, no pude dejar de notar la cantidad de bolsas de plástico que cubrían el desierto, junto con los neumáticos desechados y las carrocerías aun oxidadas de autos.

Después de una hora manejando al norte, las acacias y arbustos achaparrados dieron paso a las dunas - la clásica imagen esperada del Sahara. Nuestra 4x4 las convirtió en una ruta hacia el oeste y unos minutos más tarde, nosotros estábamos acelerando por la basta extensión de zafiro del Atlántico. Pronto nos detuvimos y lanzamos nuestra tienda, una espaciosa, casa tradicional mauritana cosida a mano, justo cuando las dunas parecían haber detenido su avance hasta el mar.
