ほんの数平方マイルの土地で400万の人間が押し合いへし合いやっていれば、こんな事件も起きるもんだ。こうも密集した人の群れによる作用と反作用の中では、さまざまな出来事のあらゆる組み合わせが起こりうる。そして、犯罪性とは無縁ながらも、突飛な小事が無数に姿をあらわすんだ。

A cold frost had set in, and the windows were thick with the ice crystals. Amid the action and reaction of so dense a swarm of humanity, every possible combination of events may be expected to take place, and many a little problem will be presented which may be striking and bizarre without being criminal.
