As we can not live without claiming lives, isn't it important to appreciate lives of what you are eating and avoid killing them in vain, not to talk things based on human's selfish definition like, "you can not eat animals but you can eat plants", or "You can eat beef and pork, but not dolphins" ?
In japan, there are expressions such as “Itadakimasu” and “Gochisousama”.
“Itadakimasu” is an expression which Japanese use every day before eating. It implies to express appreciation for lives of plants and animals as ingredients of foods from which human being are allowed to keep their lives and to live.
