Pioneer and successional plant communities are said to change over periods from 1 to 500 years. These changes—in plant numbers and the mix of species—are cumulative. Climax communities themselves change but over periods of time greater than about 500 years.
The climax community would be considered the most stable, since, by definition, it changes the least over time. Alternatively, stability can be defined as the speed with which an ecosystem returns to a particular form following a major disturbance, such as a fire.
Even if the new population is of a different species, it can approximately fill the niche vacated by the extinct population and keep the food web intact.

先駆的で継続的な植物群落は1～500年の間に変化すると言われている。この変化―植物の数と種の交配―は累積的である。極相群落そのものも変化するが、500年よりも長い時間がかかる。極相群落は、定義上、時間を通した変化が最も小さいため、一番安定していると考えられている。その一方で、安定性は生態系が火事などの重大な破壊から特定の形態に回復する速度に定義される。
新たな個体群が異なった種であったとしても、それは絶滅した個体群によって空けられた生態的地位をおおおそ埋め、食物網を完全な状態に保つことができる。
