Pioneer and successional plant communities are said to change over periods from 1 to 500 years. These changes—in plant numbers and the mix of species—are cumulative. Climax communities themselves change but over periods of time greater than about 500 years.
The climax community would be considered the most stable, since, by definition, it changes the least over time. Alternatively, stability can be defined as the speed with which an ecosystem returns to a particular form following a major disturbance, such as a fire.
Even if the new population is of a different species, it can approximately fill the niche vacated by the extinct population and keep the food web intact.

先駆種による連続的な植物群落は、1年から500年に渡る期間において変化するといわれている。植物の数や種の組み合わせにおけるこれらの変化は蓄積されていく。極相群落もそれ自体が変化するのだが、500年より長い期間においてである。極相群落はその名の通り、時が経過しても変化が最も少ないため、最も安定しているとされている。そのほかに、火災のような大きな環境のかく乱の後、生態系が特定の形に戻るスピードで安定性を定義することもできる。異なる種で構成される群落が形成されたとしても、絶滅した種が存在しなくなった隙間をほとんど埋めることができ、食物網は保全され続ける。
