Pioneer and successional plant communities are said to change over periods from 1 to 500 years. These changes—in plant numbers and the mix of species—are cumulative. Climax communities themselves change but over periods of time greater than about 500 years.
The climax community would be considered the most stable, since, by definition, it changes the least over time. Alternatively, stability can be defined as the speed with which an ecosystem returns to a particular form following a major disturbance, such as a fire.
Even if the new population is of a different species, it can approximately fill the niche vacated by the extinct population and keep the food web intact.

外来種と既存の植物は１年から５００年の間に切り替わると言われています。植物の数にみられるこれらの変化と種の混合は累積的です。５００年ほどの期間を越えて極相群落自体はかわります。極相群落は最も安定していると、定義上時間的な変化が少なめであるということから考えられています。その代わりに、安定性は生態系が大きな障害（例えば火事）の結果、独自の携帯に戻る速度と定義されることができます。たとえ新しい個体群が異なる種であるとしても、それはおおよそ消えた集団が立ち退いた生態学的地位を満たすことができて食物網を損なわれなくすることができます。
