日本自動車販売協会連合会が発表した2011年度（2011年4月～12年3月）の新車登録台数（軽除く）は前年度比3.1％増の306万4336台となり、2年ぶりに300万台を上回った。

東日本大震災によるサプライチェーン寸断による影響で新車の生産・供給が滞り、年度前半は大幅に落ち込んだものの、部品調達の正常化で生産が急回復した。加えてエコカー補助金の復活で需要が急増、前年を上回った。
