日本のひとつの伝統文化でもある表具。
表具とは紙・布を張り、巻物・掛け軸・書画帳・屏風(びょうぶ)・襖(ふすま)などを仕立てること。
私はこの技術、趣、などに魅了されてしまった。
そして私は、その伝統技術を学んで１級表装技能士の認定を受けた。
現代の表具には機械をつかった掛軸、屏風の作成、キレ、和紙の作成も
安く盛んにはなっているが、どうしても私は手で作った職人芸に魅了される。
私はかつて親方のもとで表具の技術を磨いた。
機械を使えば屏風の骨をまっすぐに削る事はたやすい。
Hyogu, a paper-hanging is one of the traditional culture of Japan.
Hyogu refers an action of mounting rolled draperes, handing scrolls, paintings and calligraphies, folding screens, paper sliding doors, etc. by stretching paper and cloth over a base.
I was fascinated with this art and atmosphere.
And I learned the traditional art and was certified as a first rank paper-hanger.
Nowdays, people use machines to make handing scrolles and folding screens.
Although cloth and Japanese traditional paper are produced cheaply in large quantities, I am still fascinated with a hand-built craftsmanship.
Once, I honed my skills of mounting working under a senior paper-hanger.
Using a machine, it would be easy to plane a wood frame of folding screens.
それを昔ながらの方法でカンナでまっすぐ仕上げていく。
効率を考えるとめちゃめちゃ悪いかもしれない。
機械で削ったところで、手で削ったこととそんな変わるわけでもない。
ただ時間がかかっているだけなのかもしれない。
だけど、そこに私は魅力を感じる。
その日本の表具業界がドンドン小さくなっている。
表具に使う和紙を作る職人が減っている。
表具に使うキレを作る職人が減っている。
職人がどんどん減っている。
賛否両論あるかもわからないが、職人気質こそが本来の日本の素晴らしさの一因なのではないでしょうか？
I finish it straight with a plane by using a traditional method.
When I think about its efficiency, it is not very good idea.
It is not so different the finished product whichever you use - your own hands & traditional tools or a machinery plane.
Therefore, it may be only to waste of time to do it traditional way.
However, I feel charm there.
The mounting industry of Japan is getting smaller.
The craftsmen making a Japanese paper to use for a mounting are decreasing.
The craftsmen making a piece of cloth to use for a mounting are decreasing.
The number of craftsmen are decreasing steadily.
I do not know if pro or con out there. However, isn't craftsman spirit be a cause of the original Japanese splendor?
効率よく機械で大量生産というわけではなく、ひとつひとつ作品を仕上げていく。
ビジネスとしてシステムを作り上げる事は、難しく経済効果を生み出していくのは難しいかもしれない。
だけど、日本の伝統技術をなんとか後世に継承していきたい。
綺麗ごとではなく、一人でも多くの人に表具の素晴らしさを伝えていく。
それが私の人生のミッションです。
Instead of using machine to realize mass production, I would like to finish a work one by one with my own hands.
It may be difficult to build up a system to make it (or Japanese traditional way of crafts work) business, and to bring about economic effect.
However, I would like to pass a Japanese tradition technique to following generation somehow.
This is not just lip service. I really want to tell the beauty of the mounting to many people.
It is the mission of my life.
