1977年に長崎県に移り住み、昆虫を中心とした生態写真の撮影を精力的に行う。独自の工夫による昆虫スナップカメラを開発、アリ等の小型昆虫の接写技術を確立。その後、センサーを利用した撮影システム、5万分の1秒の高速ストロボ、超被写界深度接写カメラなどを次々に開発、唯一無二の生態写真を40年以上にわたり撮影し続けてきた。1978年日本写真協会新人賞、1979年伊奈信男賞を受賞。2006年には科学写真のノーベル賞とも言われるレナート・ニルソン賞、2008年には紫綬褒章も受賞。

He moved to Nagasaki Prefecture in 1977 and focused his energies on photography centered around insects. With his original device, the insect snap camera, he focused on close-up photography of ants and other small insects. Afterwards he developed--one-by-one--a photography system using sensors, a high-speed strobe at 1/50,000th of a second, and a camera for extreme depth of field in macro photography. He continued to be the only ecological photographer for over 40 years. In 1978 he won the Photographic Society of Japan's Rookie of the Year Award and the Ina Nobuo Award in 1979. In 2006 he was awarded the Lennart Nilsson Award, known as the Nobel prize for scientific photography, and also the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2008.
