In the end Gates engineered his replacement - if it is possible to replace as formidable a talent as Gates - by appointing not one but several Microsoft executives to cover his various roles. One of the first to be selected as part of the Gates succession was Steve Ballmer. A long time friend of the Microsoft co-founder, they met back in Gates' college days as Harvard University classmates. Recruited by Gates in 1980 in the early Microsoft era, Ballmer was moved into the CEO role in 2000, but with Gates still at the company his role was always likely to be overshadowed until the founder's departure.
