At General Electric, for example, Jack Welch was feted as one of the leading chief executives of his generation, yet when it came to organizing his succession Welch seemed reluctant to step down. Welch's decision to retire from GE as CEO in April 2001 was announced in advance, meticulous planning meant that three potential leadership candidates were nurtured, everything was in place, ready. In October, just six months before his retirement, the succession was put on hold until the end of 2001. Welch announced his successor Jeff Immelt in November 2000 prompting the departure of the other two candidates, with Welch eventually stepping down in September 2001.
