For some reason, to a large number of people Bill Gates came to epitomize the sinister machinations of big business in a way that no other businessman ever did before.

Although sentiments have improved since he began battling the world's ills via his philanthropic endeavours, social historians might one day be able to explain why so many people disliked him so much. For now, we can only speculate on the reasons. The most obvious explanation is envy.
