Despite its exponential growth, Gates always resisted the temptation to dilute the quality of Microsoft staff, especially in the product development teams. He knew that attracting the best programmers would make it much easier to recruit others of the same calibre. Other companies might put new hires on probation, but Microsoft preferred to do the close scrutiny before they were hired. Getting it right at the start avoided additional cost later, including the drop in morale that occurs when someone has to be dismissed because they aren't working out.
