Gates' pragmatism also extended to buying his way into key markets. He was quite prepared to go out and buy the development expertise of other companies and then plug it into the Microsoft machine. Faced with a need to create database products to compete with Borland, for example, Gates went out and spent $170 million buying the software that had already been developed by another company.
