私はボローニャブックフェアで声をかけていただいた、イラストレーターです。
その節はどうもありがとうございました。
「Baby coos」の最初の１,2pの絵を描きました。
どんなイラストを描くか検討したのですが、それ以前に文章の
「See the baby? What ‘s baby’s name? Say…」
のところで区切り、次のページで「baby!」というように、
文章の「Say…」の前でページを変えた方が絵本全体にリズムと変化が生まれ、楽しい絵本になると考えました。

I drew the first version of the 1st and 2nd pages of "Baby coos".
When I was considering what kind of illustration to draw, I thought that the previous attempt - where a break was inserted during the place where the text reads "See the baby? What's baby's name? Say..." on one page and "baby!" on the next page - was good. If we could change the page after the word "Say..." in the text, the whole rhythm of the picture book would change. I thought this would make for an interesting picture book.
そこで「Say…」の前で改ページする事を前提とした３つのアイデアと、
それらを見開き１pにまとめたものも制作しました。

A・このアイデアは、赤ちゃんがお母さんの膝のうえで絵本を読んでもらっている風景を想像しながら描きました。赤ちゃんはお母さんの膝のうえで、絵本を通して鏡を見ている赤ちゃんの手元を見ています。次のページでお母さんの膝のうえに乗っている赤ちゃんの絵を見て、赤ちゃんが絵本を通して自分を見ているような感じがすると面白いと考えています。
Also, I produced three ideas on the condition that we can change the page at "Say.." and another one that shows those ideas in two facing pages.

A. This was drawn imaging a baby whose mother is reading a book on her knees. The baby is on her mother's knees and looking at the hands of the baby who is looking into the mirror in the book. On the next page, it will be interesting to imagine that the baby on her monther's knees feels like she is just looking at herself when she sees the drawing of a baby on her mother's knees, as if she is looking at herself through the book.
ですので3,4pの絵は鏡に映ったような向きの絵です。
B・Aの3,4pを鏡移りではなくカメラで映した構図にしたものです。
C・A,Bとはまったく違うアイデアです。A,Bは赤ちゃんにとって絵の中の状況を理解するのが難しいかもしれないため、シンプルなものも考えました。
D・BとCを見開き１pにしています。
日本に帰ってから自宅の引っ越しをしなければならず、絵を送るのが期限ギリギリになってしまいましたが、baby coosの絵を描けるのを楽しみにしています。

In this way, pages 3 and 4 are like mirror image.
B, This was drawn not like mirror image but as if taken by camera.
C, Totally different idea from A and B. A and B may be too difficult for a baby to fully understand the concept of the drawing so I made it more simplistic.
D, I made B and C into 1 illustration using two facing pages.
After I returned to Japan, I had to relocate my house and it became almost too late to send you the drawings but I am really looking forward to drawing illustrations for "baby coos".
