He said it is a mechanical failure in the tape drive which prevented it from spinning correctly. The repairs totaled $191.00. Upon bringing the unit home and powering it up, I discovered that that tape inside the unit had been recycled from an old reel to reel piano recording (you can still faintly hear the original piano recording which doesn't quite fully erase as they pass over the erase heads.)
