私の尊敬する二人の経営者、柳井氏と孫氏の共通点は、常に挑戦を続け、失敗を恐れず上を目指している事である。そこには、学び続ける姿勢があり、努力と忍耐力が存在している。
「百尺竿頭一歩を進む」ということわざがある。文字通り素直に解釈すると、百尺とは約30ｍ、その長い竿のてっぺんまで登りつめた所からさらに進めという無茶な言葉である。しかし、この言葉には、すでに努力をしたうえにさらに尽力せよ、現状に安住していては何の進歩も生まれない、という真意が込められている。

The common point between Mr.Yanai and Mr. Son, the two business managers whom I respect, is that both leaders always continue to challenge with no fear of failure, trying to be better. In this point, you can find a posture to keep on learning, efforts and perseverance.
An old saying states, "Hyaku-shaku kanto ippo o susumu. Interpretating this proverb literally, hyaku-shaku is roughly thirty meters. When you reach to the top of such a long rod, go one step further. The expression is rather unreasonable. However, the true intention of the expression is that it is important to make further efforts than the distance one considers sufficient. You will not progress if you are complacent about the current situation.

One common point of the two managers that I respect, Mr. Yanai and Mr. Son, is that they are always ready for new challenges and aim at higher goals not fearing any failures. This is an attitude that shows readiness to learn and an ability to make efforts together with perseverance.
There is a (Zen) proverb that says that (one should) "move ever one step further of the 30 feet climbing rod" (hyakushakukanto ippo o susumu). The straight literal interpretation of this is as follows: because hundred feet is about 30 m, after you have climbed to the top of this very high climbing rod, you still have to move further. It really sounds quite unreasonable. However, the true meaning that is contained in these words is that after you have already done a lot of efforts, you still need to do your best and if you stay satisfied with your current state, you will never achieve any progress.

It seems that Mr. Yanai and Mr. Son are go forward step by step staying ahead of the top of the 30-meter rod. Although they are world's leading business manager, they continue to challenge to the new things without being complacent about the current situation. I respect their stance greatly. Currently, I have not reached even to the top of the rod, but I would like to continue to learn and challenge aiming the top of the rod to be able to take one step further and stay ahead of the top.

Yanai and So indeed are progressing step by step after becoming highly successful (hyakuseki kanto ippo o susumu) as stated in Zen teachings . They are one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world, yet continues to challenge new goals rather than being complacent. I respect them for such attitudes. I am far from attaining such success, but I hope to make that my goal and progress further by learning and challenging.
