Three primary themes that were bound to the important relationships
in the youths’ lives were identified: (a) responsibility was perceived
as their obligation toward friends, partners, and parents; (b) respect was
viewed as a transactional giving and receiving of honor, solidarity, and
loyalty; and (c) reputations were considered to be earned through relationships
with significant others in their lives (Anderson, 1990).One of the major purposes of Arenson’ s (1994) qualitative descriptive
study was to ª uncover new and more optimistic information about
adolescent parenting as an impetus for evaluating our long-held negative
