In theory, the movie's subject is Wall Street, or more accurately the Wall Street mentality, which is just a more clean-scrubbed version of the gangster mentality showcased in Scorsese's "Mean Streets," "GoodFellas" and "Casino" (one could make a case that guys like Belfort are the ones who pushed the Vegas mob out of Vegas).
