Hop on a 35-minute flight from Caracas to Los Roques, an archipelago of some 350 islands, cays and islets off the northern coast of Venezuela. You will land on El Gran Roque, the only permanently inhabited island. It has just a handful of grocery stores, restaurants and dive shops (the archipelago is home to the world's third-largest coral reef). Visitors can stay in inns called posadas, converted from fishermen's homes, many of which include transfers to the nearby islands in their prices.
